Traveling is all about experiences. Whether you’re sampling local cuisine or hiking new terrains, a trip is a great way to get out of your comfort zone and get inspired. We’ve rounded up ten new ideas to add to your travel bucket list that are sure to be a unique experience — WIN.
1. Attend Oktoberfest in Germany
For three weeks in September, thousands of people flock to Munich for one of the world’s largest celebrations. Oktoberfest includes exorbitant amounts of German beer and bratwurst, amusement rides, and live music. If you’re lucky enough to make it to Germany for the party, embrace the Bavarian spirit in traditional costume and brush up on a few drinking songs to sing along with fellow Oktoberfest goers.
2. Swim in Iceland’s Hot Springs
Iceland’s Blue Lagoon is at the top of every Reykjavík travel guide, but the country actually has dozens of hot springs pools across the island. The experience of dipping into a natural hot tub in the middle of a volcanic terrain is something that belongs on every traveler’s bucket list. The northern European country is also the place to go to see the Northern lights. Time your trip between August and April for the best chance to see the spectacle.
3. Drive Route 66
Route 66 was constructed in the 1920s as one of the first cross country highways in America. The iconic road stretches from Chicago to Los Angeles, ending in Santa Monica at the edge of the Pacific Ocean. Along the way you’ll find original roadside diners, quirky attractions, and beautiful views of the midwest plains and western mountain ranges.
4. Stay in an Overwater Bungalow
If you’re looking for a unique experience as soon as you check in, look no further than the overwater bungalows that are perched on stilts above beautiful blue waters. These hideaways have gained popularity as a rejuvenating getaway and can be found across the world — from Belize to Bora Bora. Spend a day reading in a hammock above a lagoon or snorkeling below.
5. Hike Machu Picchu in Peru
Atop the mountain of Machu Picchu sit the ruins of an Inca citadel that is believed to have been built in the mid-1400s as the home for an Inca emperor. The site is a great bucket list trip for all travelers. If you prefer the outdoors, opt for a week long hike up to the peak; but if you’re more of a city girl there’s a scenic train ride that will take you from the nearby town of Cusco to the base of Machu Picchu. If you visit the ruins as just a day trip, tag on a night in the nearby city of Lima to experience local culture and cuisine.
6. Sing Along at the Glastonbury Festival
The Glastonbury Music Festival takes place in Britain each June and the lineup often includes a lot of the same artists as California’s Coachella that takes place a few months earlier. At the London festival, attendees have access to five days of music, unique food and drink, and art installations — without the flower crowns, 100-degree weather, or dust storms that are fixtures at Coachella.
7. Attend the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta
Each Fall, the New Mexico city welcomes thousands of guests for a week long hot air balloon festival. Hundreds of balloons take to the sky above Albuquerque and the view is something unlike anything else (and great Instagram material). Guests of the event can ascend on a hot air balloon ride themselves.
8. Cruise Around Europe (Literally)
A cruise is a great way to see multiple locations with minimal itinerary-planning stress. Rather than sailing around very touristy Caribbean islands, add a European cruise to your bucket list instead. Norwegian Cruise Lines offer 7-10 day itineraries that will take you around the Greek Isles to Venice, from London to Norway, or Barcelona to the Canary Islands. If planning a trip to Europe has always overwhelmed you, a cruise is a great way to see all of those places that you have on your list!
9. Let Loose at The Yacht Week
Yacht Week caters to the young and wealthy, and while certain routes are decidedly more Spring Break than relaxation, the experience is one-of-a-kind and perfect for a girls’ getaway or bachelorette party. The seven day excursions include a personal yacht and skipper, and a pre-planned itinerary for you and 10-20 other boats. The company’s original route through Croatia includes floating raft parties, seaside yoga, and a white party in Hvar.
10. Experience the Wisteria Flower Tunnel
Within the Kawachi Fuji Gardens in Japan lies the Wisteria Flower Tunnel. Hundreds of wisteria plants line the tranquil walkway through the gardens and bloom each year in early May. The Gardens are two hours outside of Tokyo and feature over 20 acres of flowers fit for a fairytale. If you already have the city of Tokyo on your travel bucket list, the Kawachi Fuji Gardens are a must for a day trip out of the city.
