4 Women on How They Prep for the Workweek

Bringing your lunch to work every day is a surefire way to save money during the week, but I can tell you as someone who starts each week with the best intentions (and around Wednesday can be caught ordering pizza and running out of clean pants) that it’s all about the prep. Unless you devote some time on Sunday to prepping for the week, even the best plans can go awry. But honestly, the only “vegging” I want to do on Sunday is on my couch with no plans to move any of my extremities. Yes, I’ve been known to brave Trader Joe’s on a Sunday (seriously, we all deserve medals for that feat) and prep a week’s worth of meals by mid-afternoon. And when I do? I always feel better and more rested throughout the week.

Sunday loafing versus Sunday prepping both have their benefits, so I set out to investigate other women’s Sunday routines. I asked four women at various stages of their life and career to share their Sunday routine with me. Not all routines are equal — it all depends on what works best for your lifestyle and budget. But surely they have some secrets or tips that can apply to the rest of us? At the very least just confirm it’s okay if I spend most of my Sunday under the covers.

We partnered with Care/of to give each one of them a chance to try their vitamin subscription as part of their usual Sunday routine. The great thing about Care/of is there’s no weekly prep required (THANK GOD), so the vitamins literally fit with any lifestyle. After taking a quiz about your daily habits and needs, you’ll receive a month’s worth of vitamins delivered to your door and prepackaged into easy, daily doses. And because all four women (and everyone on our team) adheres to a strict budget, we like that Care/of is about 20% less than what you would pay for the same supplements in a health food store. Win.

Maybe one of these routines will inspire you to prep a week’s worth of meals… or maybe they will just inspire you to pop a vitamin before you get back to that binge-sesh. Hey, we feel ya.

What are your work hours like?

I have a pretty long commute, so I get on my bus to work at 7:30 am and get home by 5:30/6:30 in the evening… not bad!

Generally, how do you spend Sunday?

I usually make nice, French press coffee (no time for that on weekdays!) and some breakfast on Sunday mornings, then I watch whatever show I am binging for a bit, walk to the farmers market that sets up near my apartment every Sunday, go to the grocery store, and (more often than I like) grab take-out. As far as work, I usually catch up on reading emails Sunday night, but try not to answer them until Monday starts.

Do you meal prep?

I sometimes use Blue Apron meals, but now that I live alone it really isn’t practical (too much food). I cook something simple for myself 2-3 nights a week, then go out with friends or grab take-out on the other nights.

Is Monday one of your busier days of the week?

Work days tend to be longest, so Monday through Wednesday usually.

What are your post-work weeknights like?

I run errands, eat, meet up with friends, and sometimes go to yoga.

What vitamins did Care/of suggest for you?

Astaxanthin, Vitamin D, and Rhodiola.

What do you like most about Care/of? And how does that fit with your life?

As someone who works in UX, I thought the onboarding experience for Care/of was friendly and well-written, especially for a skeptic like me. I rush around in the mornings, so they fit easily into my wash-face-brush-teeth-run-out routine.

What are your work hours like?

Monday through Friday, 7:00 am — 4:00 pm.

Generally, how do you spend Sunday?

Grocery shopping, meal prepping, doing laundry, and cleaning up the house. I try to get ready for the workweek on Sundays. Usually, my husband and I will go grocery shopping on Sunday morning. Then when I get home, I prep our food for the week. I also make sure our laundry is done for the three of us and that our house is picked up. We usually also take the opportunity to do yard work on Sundays (cleaning up after our dogs, pulling weeds, etc).

Do you meal prep?

Yes, I meal prep for my 6-month old by boiling/steaming fruits and veggies, then pureeing them. I meal prep for myself and my husband by making breakfast and lunch for the week. This can be prepping breakfast smoothies, prepping egg muffins, or another type of breakfast casserole. Our lunches usually consist of salads which are either put in Mason jars or Tupperware. I also often make a protein and a side for lunch such as chicken and broccoli, steak and sweet potatoes, pork chops and squash/zucchini, etc. I pre-package things too — like our snacks for the week (veggies, fruits, nuts, hummus in little cups, etc).

Is Monday one of your busier days of the week?

Not necessarily. My husband has a side business so he is gone Thursday and Friday evenings as well as Saturday during the day so those are busier days for me. However, this semester is different because I have a semester off to focus on writing my dissertation for a doctorate program. Normally, I have classes on Monday nights so then my answer would be YES!

What are your post-work weeknights like?

Being a school teacher, I usually have to stay late after school at least once a week for a meeting of some kind. After I leave, I have to drive 45 minutes to my mother in law’s house to pick up my son and then another 30 minutes back to my house. Once I get home, I quickly throw together dinner and then feed my son. I either eat before I feed my son or when my husband gets home, he eats, and then takes care of our son while I eat. Afterwards, we play or read with our son and then he goes to bed around 7:30 pm. After he goes to my sleep, my husband and I will usually watch TV and relax until we go to bed, usually between 9:00 – 10:00 pm.

What vitamins did Care/of suggest for you?

Ashwagandha, Rhodiola, Astaxanthin, Probiotic Blend, and Fish Oil.

What do you like most about Care/of? And how does that fit with your life?

I love that I didn’t have to think about which vitamins were necessary or do my own research. It’s reassuring that other professionals are helping provide me with what’s necessary to be healthier and lead a balanced lifestyle.

What are your work hours like?

As a small business owner who works from home and deals with time-sensitive issues as a major part of my everyday life, I never have set hours. I get up daily between 6:30 and 7:00 am, respond to all urgent emails, drink some coffee, and try to get in front of the computer before 9:00. Most days I try to sign off around 6:00 pm but its typically more like 7:00 and I will respond to emails and calls throughout the evening as needed.

Generally, how do you spend Sunday?

Sunday is one of my favorite days of the week. My husband and I always make Sunday our day and we always make sure that we get to spend the day together even if it’s full of errands. My weeks are always so busy and I feel best when I go into the week having everything I need organized. I think its so important to start the week with sheets freshly cleaned, all the laundry done, a meal plan shopped for and prepped for the week (including food for when I am too busy to stop and make lunch), and have a plan for what days errands need to happen or when I need to get up earlier to get it all done. Having a “schedule” made for the week means I have no surprises and allows me to mostly avoid the feeling of “having no time” which makes me so anxious! At the end of the day, depending on the weather we might make a nice dinner and listen to some music or binge watch our latest shows.

Do you meal prep?

Meal prep for me consists mostly of creating a weekly menu and making sure that I have all of the items available to me and I don’t have to run to the store multiple times per week. On Sunday, I like to make a big batch of protein that can be used in all of my lunches for the week as it makes it so much easier to eat healthy during the day. If I have a slow cooker meal on the menu I plan that into my lunch routine and even possibly leftovers a second night for dinner.

Is Monday one of your busier days of the week?

Mondays always seem to feel very overwhelming at first catching up on email and projects for the week. I am a big schedule and to-do list person so I try to block out my day and accomplish certain tasks during assigned periods.

What are your post-work weeknights like?

I try to cook our meals at home Sunday — Thursday, so after work is typically dinner prep and clean up while catching up with my husband about our day, light cleaning/laundry, and then snuggling up on the couch to watch a little TV before an early bedtime around 9:00 or 10:00 pm. I try to keep the weeknights free of plans and as low-key as possible.

What vitamins did Care/of suggest for you?

I have babies on the brain so my vitamin pack was geared towards being my healthiest self for my future child. The Care/of prenatal is great as it is geared towards sensitive stomachs which has been a big problem for me in the past and has hindered my ability to stick to a vitamin regimen. In addition the prenatal, Care/of suggested a probiotic to help keep my problem gut healthy, a complex B vitamin (that includes the active, easy to absorb, methylfolate) which helps produce energy and create blood cells (all good for a potential baby), and a veggie omega that packs the omega 3, EPA, and DHA punch that helps support brain and bone development throughout pregnancy.

What do you like most about Care/of? And how does that fit with your life?

I like that I know the ingredients in my vitamins are pure and actually healthy. Not all vitamins are created equal and after chatting with my doctor, I feel confident I am getting the high-quality nutrients I need from Care/of. As a small business owner, travel is something I do frequently and being able to easily take my vitamins with me and not have them swimming around in my luggage makes the whole process so much easier to manage.

What are your work hours like?

Early mornings and long days (12-13 hours) typically.

Generally, how do you spend Sunday?

If I’m not working the weekend, I sleep in, take a group fitness class somewhere in the city, grab breakfast or lunch, and run some errands/clean house/do laundry. My Sundays off are leisurely and I love them… especially if I’ve been out the night before. The prep that’s most important to me is laundry and a clean house.

Do you meal prep?

I wish. Forever one of my goals. I eat out way too much.

Is Monday one of your busier days of the week?

Not usually with my nursing schedule.

What are your post-work weeknights like?

Shower, dinner (or dinner, shower), read, or watch an episode of whatever I’m currently watching on HBO or Netflix.

What vitamins did Care/of suggest for you?

Probiotic blend, Vitamin D, Iron, Ashwagandha, Milk Thistle, Evening Primrose, CoQ10. Since I share a bathroom, I try to keep the amount of product stored in it to a minimum. My Care/of dispenser was cute enough to keep on my bedside with my standard glass of water.

What do you like most about Care/of? And how does that fit with your life?

I like that Care/of recommends what it wants me to take based on my lifestyle, but I can also add additional vitamins I’ve been curious about. Since my routine and work schedule varies by the day, the dispenser and individual packets are also incredibly convenient.
