Blog: Dreams + Jeans
Girl Behind Dreams + Jeans: Alex Yeske
Occupation: Graphic designer for Madewell
Where are you from and where do you currently reside? I am originally from New Jersey (and am a Jersey girl through and through) but I went to high school outside of Annapolis, MD and college in Syracuse, NY. I am currently living in NYC!
How did you decide to start blogging? What gave you the courage to go for it? I started blogging a little over two years ago while at a summer internship. A coworker of mine was a blogger and she was the first real person I met who blogged. I started reading as many blogs as I could and knew I wanted to be a part of the amazing community. My internship didn’t interest me that much and while at school my major was so intense that I really needed a break from it all. I wanted a place where I could share things I was interested in (fashion, interior design) and connect with other likeminded people and so Dreams + Jeans was born!
What can people expect when they visit your blog? A little bit of everything–style, interiors, graphic design, photography, art. I have a lot of interests and use Dreams + Jeans as place to catalog them all.
What are your favorite blog posts you’ve ever written? I love looking back on my early posts because they have so much energy and passion. I was just starting out and the second I found something cool, I had to blog about it right away (and ended up posting multiple times a day!). Right now I love creating my Monday series, Currently Coveting. It’s so much fun choosing a color palette or pattern that I want to focus on and finding great items that work well together.
What kind of camera do you use? I’m rarely taking photos for my blog, but when I do I use a Nikon D3000 SLR camera. And just its default lens. I’m hoping to work on my photography skills one of these days!
What influences and inspires you in your blogging? This is a tough one! I’m inspired by so much, especially living in NYC and being exposed to so many amazing things. I’ve always been inspired by colors + patterns. My personal and design aesthetic is influenced by classic pieces and simple designs. I’m always drawn to a “relaxed chic” look (as I call it) in fashion and love nothing more than smart graphic design. Simple is always more in my opinion.
You’re currently a graphic designer at Madewell. How did you land that position and can you give some advice to girls who want to get into this line of work? I landed the position through relentless networking. Most grads from my major end up working at design firms and I always dreamed I’d do something in fashion. I couldn’t rely heavily on alumni connections for a job so I took to the internet and networked with as many people as I could who worked at places that I would love to work at. I’m a huge believer in doing what you love + going after your dreams, not waiting around for them to come to you.
Any other words of wisdom for Everygirls out there? I can’t stress networking enough. I really owe my job to not being afraid to reach out to people I admired. I’m a huge proponent of reaching out to people because 99% of the time, they are willing to help you out in some way, whether it’s just with advice or something as big as a job/internship. And people are especially nice while you’re still in school so milk that! Also, I’ve always loved the phrase “everything works out” and remind myself of it constantly when things are going wrong. My friend and I came up with it in high school and it’s always stuck with me.
