Coffee Talk: How Do You Beat the Winter Doldrums?

theeverygirl_coffeetalk_winter

While we’ve been spoiled by an unnaturally warm winter, pack on the layers, grab a warm drink, and brace yourself for January’s bitter chill. Despite the beauty of the season, waking up in the morning means frozen fingers and toes and when those winter woes creep up on us, it’s oh-so-tempting to stay in bed. Unfortunately, for most of us, that’s not an option. Whether big or small, we want to know what tips you have to beat the winter doldrums. What do you do to stay happy and healthy throughout the cold and dreary months?

Vitamin D every day and walks outside whenever I can squeeze them in!

Eat salmon and mushrooms! Both contain vitamin D. And it helps to dress up and go on a date with your guy or friends to go eat it!

It might not be healthy, but hot chocolate gets me through the dreary months :)

I’ve been trying to make sure I get as much sunlight as a I can. Yes it’s cold, but if I can sit by a window I will to look at the bright sky to lift my mood!! =)

Enjoying winter activities like skiing, ice skating, snow shoeing, etc on the weekends. Having something to look forward to makes my week fly by and before I know it I’m then enjoying spring.

take extra time to stretch at your desk (since I don’t go out for lunch when it’s this cold out in Chi), walk the dog extra long in the evening (she needs it as much as I do), and have a fabulous drink in the evening to celebrate making it through another dreary day!

Lots of hot coffee! I have also been moisturizing with coconut oil! Very helpful for dry skin!

Find sunshine wherever possible, literally, a big window, a quick walk outside, a sunlight lamp

I try (to the degree possible) to embrace it – go snowboarding, bake, have friends over rather than going out, movie nights on the projector, interiors projects, etc.  It is tough though, especially in NYC-sized apartments.  Happy Vitamin D day!

the gym! even though it’s the last thing I want to do (couch + sweatpants > treadmill + ill-fitting sports bra), exercise keeps me happy and healthy. endorphins rule.

Surprisingly the gym has been my go-to for staying warm and gives me motivation throughout the day. I go after work so it gives me a great reason to take a warm shower before crawling into bed.

  • Jen

I bundle up in layers and aim to get to the gym at least two or three times a week to get those endorphins going. I also do fun 10-15 minute workouts at home on days I can’t get to the gym. Also, nothing beats cuddling up with my significant other on the couch watching movies.

  • Susan Hager

Lots of fun, warm foods! I love to eat something warm when I walk in the door. Cocoa helps too!

  • Josie Morris

I dont. But I am going to try this vitamin D thing. There has gotta be a better way..

  • Emily Harden

Going to the gym as often as possible has kept me going! Nothing like walking home in the chill after a good workout.

Well….drink lots of coffee. Take a lot of bubble baths (with a glass of wine nearby), rummage through my closet and look and organize all my spring-y clothes, gets me excited about whats upcoming and proably one of my biggest is buying flowers weekly. I buy orchids, hydrangeas, tulips, whatever is in season…they really make me happy and just add such cheer to any room they are placed in.

I go for plenty of walks (lucky enough to live near central park) outside and soak up the light.

I’ve started going to the gym for about 45 minutes everyday. That’s certainly been keeping me warm. This is the best time to wrap yourself in a blanket and read a good book. I am in the middle of Pride and Prejudice right now ;)

I just wrote a whole post about how I beat the winter blues! Lots of sunshine, good friends and a little dancing :) Check my list out at http://heatherlmassey.wordpress.com/2013/01/17/those-winter-blues/

Never skip spin time, lots of tea, & special naked movie date nights with my man on the couch under a fluffy blanket!

  • Meg

Hot coffee, staying active, and keeping some bright colors around (ex: fresh flowers in my room or kitchen, a brightly colored scarf, etc.)

  • Debra Norris

Morning walks with my dog, good books, and a warm fire for the simple pleasures. I also up my intake of Vitamin C, Zinc, and Echinacea to help stay healthy during the bug season.
