Coffee Talk: Least Favorite Holiday Song

The Everygirl_Least Favorite Christmas Song

We all know the good ones. Let’s talk about the bad (and definitely not forget to mention the ugly).

To get the proverbial ball rolling, we asked the The Everygirl staff about their least favorites when it comes to holiday tune-age.

Notable mentions:

  • The Chipmunks’s Hula Hoop
  • The New Kids on the Block’s Funky Funky Xmas
  • Any rendition of The Little Drummer Boy
  • The always-depressing Christmas Shoes

What’s your least favorite holiday song?

  • http://stylizedexistence.com/blog Lauren Corso

I hate Paul McCartney “Wonderful Christmastime” …. seriously.  It’s the worst. I must change the radio when it comes on. But I love “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas” so my judgement is probably a little skewed ;)

    • Avinson1210

That McCartney song came to my mind immediately. It’s just awful!

Haha, I LOVE “I Want a Hippopatamus for Christmas!”

    CHRISTMAS SHOES.

    ew.

I’m going to go ahead and be bold here…Any rendition of “Baby It’s Cold Outside.”  As someone who has a job at a rape crisis and victim services center, I just can’t stomach it.  ”Hey what’s in this drink” and “The answer is no” are particularly horrible lines.  Not everyone will interpret it that way, but because of my experiences I can’t hear anything else in it.

    • Chelsea

Wow… I have never thought about the song that way! My mom and my sister work at shelters for victims of domestic violence, and I can’t wait to get their take. It’s a little horrifying now.

  • Chelsea

Agree with Lauren- that song just kills me. I don’t know how it went so wrong, but it makes me cringe.

  • Chloe Moon

I don’t like “Last Christmas” where the person gets broken up with the day after christmas…it’s like why?? It’s so sad…I know this year you have someone special but it still tugs at your heart strings in not a good way…

Chloe, I completely agree! I can’t stand that song. It just sounds needy and sad, the complete opposite of how the holidays should be spent. If I never hear “Last Christmas” again, it’ll be too soon.

  • Rachel Moger

oh my gosh! I was just going to say Christmas Shoes. Every year I cry when it comes on… and it’s not even a good song! Yesterday we were on our way to pick our Christmas tree and Christmas Shoes came on… My husband went to switch the station and I told him that I’d be fine. Not even through the first chorus and I’m crying. Not cool! ;)

Haha this is a great one! I would have to say any Chipmunk song makes my ears bleed!

  • Kim

I have to say Dominic the Christmas donkey! HeeHaw, HeeHaw. Lol

  • Samantha Peterson

I agree with Lauren – I recently just heard “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas” and thought it was quite catchy…but my least favorite is Feliz Navidad. Same phrase over and over again. I always catch myself listening to it and singing along but we need an updated take on it, at least, if all radio stations are going to keep it in rotation!

    • Kelsey Dickerson McPherson

I completely agree with you! I swear every other song on the radio is Feliz Navidad.

  • Kim

So The Everygirl staff doesn’t like any renditions of The Little Drummer Boy? Have you heard Bob Seger’s rendition? Its the only rendition I like but then again I’m a Bob Seger’s fan.

  • Simonebrehon

Heeeeyyy the Little Drummer Boy is my fav Christmas Song….everytime I hear it, I think of the SNL skit with Mary Catherine…lol

  • http://fancyfunction.wordpress.com/ Christine @Fancy Function

I can’t stand “Christmas Shoes” – ugh, the worst!

  • ChristmasLove

This is sad. Who would ever want to have a discussion about bad Christmas songs?! IT IS THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR!!!!! POSITIVITY PEOPLE!!!

  • http://thehistoryofever.com/ Brianna

I doubt anyone has ever heard Rosie O’Donnell and Elmo’s rendition of “Do You Hear What I Hear”, but it’s my ONLY non-favorite Christmas song (I love them all!). My sister is bizarre (and 23) and makes us listen to it every year. Vom.

What about “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer”? Definitely my least fav. Oh and “Christmas Shoes” is way too sad.

First of all— I would actually list the Chipmunks’ song as one of my FAVORITE Christmas songs… so I’m very sad about that! ;) And secondly, Cyndi Lauper singing “Santa Baby” is just… wrong.

  • Hanna Rosman

“Grandma got ran over by a reindeer” is the absolute worst! Did grandma live? Why must grandma get hurt for people to believe in santa?

Christmas Shoes was the first one that came to mind for me before reading through the entire post! So I was quite pleased to see it on your list :) and know I’m not heartless for finding it annoying and, as you stated, depressing…

  • Kristin

Dominick the Donkey. Yeah, that’s actually a Christmas song…

“Santa Baby”. Sexy Santa totally creeps me out.

  • http://tarabrooke.com/ Glamour Muse

Yeah I do agree with you guys.  Paul McCartney “Wonderful Christmastime” is my least favorite holiday song. But I somehow like the chipmunks. What about you guys?

  • Allyson

I’m a big fan of Alvin and gang, but I hate Feliz Navidad! Too cheesy for me.

  • Cristina

Agree with Feliz Navidad as the worst. It is so annoying

  • http://twitter.com/thesilentspace Kim B

I personally cannot stand Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You.” Perhaps because it is overplayed, and perhaps because I think the sentiment of Christmas should be about appreciating the loved ones you already have and not pining for what you want.

  • Alyssa Gapske

Christmas Shoes…for sure. I turn the radio off when ever it comes on. I think it’s important to realize there a lot of people who need help around the holidays..but oh gosh it’s so terrible.

I agree with Lauren, “Wonderful Christmastime” can be super annoying.
