Coffee Talk: Valentine’s Day

theeverygirl_coffeetalk_valentinesday

February 14th is here again, and we want to wish all of our Everygirls a happy Valentine’s Day! Each of us has seen this holiday come and go many times over the years, and as such, we’ve had plenty of time to define what it means for us. Long gone are the simple grade school days of exchanging cards with classmates (when everyone was obligated to participate). As we’ve grown up, so has our idea of this Feast of St. Valentine and the way we incorporate it—or don’t incorporate it—into our lives.

While we can all agree that the focus of the day is love, there are differing opinions when it comes to who should actually be celebrating. Is it worth bothering over if you don’t have a date? Or should you embrace the chance to spread the love to those around you, regardless of your relationship status?

What’s your take? Do you like the idea of celebrating with friends, like we illustrated last week with our friendship soiree? Or do you feel that Valentine’s Day is best suited for those in a romantic relationship?

Happy Vday! I feel like it’s the best day to just celebrate with everyone you love. Family, friends, or your significant other!

I think that everyone should celebrate love regardless of whether or not you have a date! There are so many people to love and be thankful for and that’s what this day is really all about!

My husband and I are very low key – a card and some candy! It’s no big deal to us. :)

This vday I’ll spend with my puppy :) My husband is out of town and I’m exhausted from traveling last weekend.

(I used to hate valentines in high school and wore all black on those days. Now, I don’t mind it as much.)

My fiance and I have never celebrated V-day.  I know it’s fun for most girls, but I want his declarations of love (I know that sounds cheesy) to be unprompted.  Today and for the last month, the world has been telling you and reminding you that YOU MUST show your love on February 14.  Why not June 10? Or September 22?

Let me clarify though, I certainly don’t hate V-day.  I just don’t take it seriously.  Last night my girlfriends and I had a fabulous time celebrating Galentines by drinking wine, chatting and doing crafty things.  It was a blast.  And when my fiance and I have kids one day, we’ll certainly do class valentines cards, but for me, it’s really just another day.  :)

I think Valentine’s day is all about being grateful for the loved ones in your life. Mom, boyfriend, best friend, etc. The trouble I often run into is expectation: Is this present enough? What is the best way to surprise him? Will I spend as much as her on our gifts? This year I’m trying to keep it simple and remember the intention behind it. The presents come from love, so don’t forget that. Love is always enough.

Also I brought “Littlest Pet Shop” Valentine’s cards into my office. What could be more fun than that!?

Happy Valentine’s Day to all of you everygirls. You are loved, so celebrate it!

    Love,

    Maureen

I love Valentine’s Day! It doesn’t matter if I’m in a relationship or not. I love an excuse to decorate with pink, make cookies, and send Valentine’s to family and friends. I see it as a fun opportunity to show the people who matter to me how much I love them.

Happy Valentine’s Day! I celebrate this holiday a bit differently than everyone else because it is also my birthday! The day is usually spent with birthday festivities and then a dinner date with my husband. He hates the two holidays being at the same time (so much pressure!) but I love it – a holiday that people spend being grateful for their loved ones, what’s not to love? I do like the friendship soiree that was featured last week and may host one in a few years when the 14th falls on a weekend!

    XO misha

Happy Valentine`s Day. I didn`t celebrate but I went out for coffee with friends and we had a lovely day!

My husband and I, usually exchange cards and go out for a nice dinner. After dinner, my sister, her boyfriend and some of my single friends will stop by the house for desert. My son who is 17 (no girlfriend this year) is going out to eat with his single friends (guys and girls). Yes it’s the day of love, but we love our family and friends so yes I love the idea of the friendship soirée. Is there a friendship holiday yet? I’m surprised Hallmark hasn’t declared a day for that! Lol

I love spreading the Valentine’s cheer to everyone! I didn’t have a significant other this year, so I spent the evening getting to know a new friend over dinner. It’s about being with ones that you love, romantic or not.
