Coffee Talk: What Are Your Intentions for 2013?

theeverygirl_2013

The new year is often a time to reflect on the things we’ve done and the things we hope to accomplish in the coming year. Recently our Living Well columnist Jess Lively posited an idea to ditch New Year’s resolutions and instead make intentions. We typically set goals for ourselves in the new year; launching The Everygirl was one on both of our lists in 2012. And this year we have an itemized list of plans to grow the site and brand.

But we’d love to know–what is one of your intentions for 2013?

Can my intention be to live with more intention?

It sounds like a typical intention or resolution, but I want to be healthier. I know that eating better, working out and getting more sleep with help my body and mind.  I’m ready to be stress-free and full of energy!

I want to have fun this year…throw more parties, see more shows, dress up and get out of the house!

Finding joy in the process rather than being so result-driven that the process is miserable. :)

I’m trying to curb my online shopping addiction.  One day at a time!

My biggest intention this year is to celebrate and enjoy my first year of marriage! It’s also about getting in shape and preparing my life for a baby in the next few years.

One of my friends sets the same resolution every year and I love it: to be better than she was the year before. Isn’t that what we all want? And think about how amazing we’d all be by the time we reach our old age?

Take life a little less seriously, eat well, surround myself with positive individuals, listen to my heart.

Last year I made a point of not being scared of things that I typically avoided. ie. finally getting my driver’s license at 26! I want to continue this theme in 2013. This means going on a roller coaster- I’m absolutely terrified, though so many people find them fun, perhaps I’m missing out :)

My intention for 2013 is to write more. I’ve never been more self aware than when I reflect and articulate my emotions, opinions, etc on paper (or in Evernote now).

I’ve been reading so much online about making New Year’s Resolutions or not making them because they will get broken by week 2, or changing the name so it’s not as intimidating.

I typically make a few resolutions every year, some years I totally accomplish what I set out to do. Sometimes I don’t.

This year is a big year in my life. I’m getting married in April, moving out of the parent’s house (finally) and launching my blog (trying to make it as regular as possible).

Lots of change. But there are still more ways I want to improve my life. I want to work out regularly (six times a week), I want to get more organized (moving should help with that), I want to stay on top of preparations for my bible studies and mentoring, and I want to get this wedding stuff done with.

It’s so much and I honestly don’t know where to start when it begins with breaking these goals down in to manageable monthly chunks.

My word for 2013 is choose.

I think “choose” is a good word. Because how I spend my time, how I spend my money, and how I react are all choices. I am choosing to do that or not. I am choosing to save or spend. I am choosing to get up and do something or stay put.

I don’t usually make resolutions, but I made quite a few this year. I like the idea of referring to them as “intentions” though. This year I intend to:

-Love myself unconditionally, including (but not limited to) not hinging ANY of my self-worth on whether this or that guy likes me. I’m not 15 anymore!

-Volunteer. I used to regularly, but I just stopped a few years ago, and it’s pathetic. I’ve reached out to two organizations recently, and hopefully something will come from one or both of those.

-Not drink so much that I have a hangover. I get hangovers really easily, so it’s harder than it sounds.

-Keep running. Last January I started running regularly again and it’s made the biggest difference in my life, in terms of health, friendships and overall confidence. (This may break the “intention” rule, but I’d also like to PR in a 1/2 marathon.)

-Land a job I enjoy and am proud of. I’ve been floundering in this arena for too long, and I need to remedy that.

-Say “yes” more. This is another one I started last year and I want to keep improving on. I’m naturally shy, but I’ve realized that saying “yes” gets easier and easier the more I do it.

-Eat less meat. I’ve read a lot about how if everyone didn’t eat meat one day a week, it would save an enormous amount of energy. I’m committing to foregoing meat at least once a week, but preferably more than that.

-Live my values. Some of the above cover this, but there are other ways too, like shopping at small, locally-owned stores, buying American made whenever possible, not gossiping, forging friendships with people of all political parties, and generally being the change. :)

(After writing all that, I realized that you asked for ONE intention… Oops! Oh well, it helped me to write them out anyway…)

My intention is to live more intentionally… with my time, money, energy. I want to be able to leave aside everything that isn’t important and stay focused on what is!

I’ve got a few ‘plans’ for 2013 that I’m breaking down into mini -to-do’s'…
    - become the main earner in my house
    - go on a tropical beach holiday (DONE already – off to far both Queensland, Aust next month!)
    - master my yoga handstand
    - eat as much natural organic food as possible
    - simplify as many areas of my life as possible
