Coffee Talk: What You Love About Where You Live

theeverygirl_sanfran

During our 20s and 30s, the place where we live has a great impact on our lives. These are the cities we inhabit during breakups and promotions, first jobs and first dates, all while living in not-so-Carrie-Bradshaw-like first apartments (you call that a studio?!).

We can’t dispute this one fact: the importance of interacting with your environment—new or old—is paramount. Tell us what you love about where you live.

I’m just learning to love where as live in my early 20s, as it is where I have lived all my life. Discovering what my hometown is really like, by getting my own place, my own ‘big girl job,’ and my own ‘grown up’ friends, has made me see North Carolina in an entirely new light. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t love it more than I did as a kid.

Although, I’m still itching to explore new places too! Hooray for the freedom of your 20s!

Cincinnati has an awesome restaurant scene.  Sooooo many good places to eat here.  Love that the most about this city.

    • chicsprinkles

I feel the same way about Cincinnati and I can’t wait to move back in a couple of years. Yumm.

I’ve had a love affair with Chicago since I was a teenager and have been proud to live here ever since then. The winters stink, but the summers make it worth it. The apartments are expensive, but they’re you home. I’ve found that I don’t have much trouble getting down to kitchen business, even though I only have 25 square feet.

I’ve been obsessed with NYC since I was a kid. Luckily I went to NYU for my undergrad studies and have lived here ever since. Yes, it can be crowded and is definitely not the cleanest place in the world, but you just can’t beat the restaurants, lounges or boutiques that we’ve got : )

My husband and I bought a house 2 years ago and moved to the suburbs.  It took a long time for me to adjust to not living in the city and being able to walk everywhere but now I love it. I love retreating home to our cute, quiet neighborhood at night.  I also love having a backyard where we can eat dinners and weekend breakfasts on our patio.  We are only 40 min from Manhattan and there is a lot to do where we live (like great restaurants, shopping, beaches) but I now enjoy it a lot more than the city.

I’ve never thought I’d be back living in the Northwest, especially not in Seattle. One thing that I love the most about Seattle & also Tacoma is the historic values of the cities, the ports, old architecture, having 4 seasons instead of 2 like we had in the Southwest, etc. It’s a photographer’s paradise.

  • Cristina

I love Raleigh because it feels like the perfect blend- it’s a city but has a bit of a small town feel; we have a thriving downtown but tons of nature nearby; we have a growing culinary scene but still love sweet tea and biscuits :)

    • ELRobinson825

I live in Raleigh too and I love it!

I love my NYC studio apartment – and my walk-in closet!  A MAJOR find in the heart of Chelsea, I can’t ever imagine giving it up!

My husband and I just moved to Connecticut, about 45 minutes outside of NYC. We’re super new to the area, but I already love the fact that we have access to the city, but also quick access to the beach and winding back roads beneath brightly colored autumn trees. It’s fabulous.

I can’t rave enough about Chicago! Great cityscapes, night life, restaurants, history, and people. I moved here with a one-way ticket and a suitcase at 22 and never looked back. Chicago is HOME!

I live in Port Moody, a city right outside Vancouver. I love where I live, there’s the ocean, mountains and tons of nature at my door step all while still feeling like a city. I wish I lived in Downtown Vancouver as I get a little bored with what Port Moody has to offer in regards to shops, restaurants etc. I also miss having loads of people around me to socialize with.

I HATED Arkansas when I first moved here for college. I’m originally from Boston and it was a huge cultural change and one I didn’t like at all. Seven years later, I’m still here! The thing I love the most about Arkansas (other than it’s just plan ol’ gorgeous anytime of year) is that it is tiny. Everyone knows everyone else and it means that networking is just normal, not something you do to promote yourself. It’s just the rhythm of life. It also means that I can go from one evening spent with the Governor and be on a first name basis with important folks and then go to a rodeo with salt of the earth folks the next.

I’m so lucky I was able to study in Boston for college a few years ago. It was the perfect college town, full of ambitious, hard-working, and fun-loving students from all over the world. It was where I learned the true meaning and power of networking.

Currently, I’m back in Atlanta where I am originally from and am really enjoying living and working here as a young working professional. Atlanta is definitely on the rise with up and coming neighborhoods, such as Midtown West. It’s a great medium-paced city, full of history, charm, and culture. I love how some things never change with the culture, such as true southern hospitality!

  • Meg

I live in Central Illinois, and despite being from the Chicago suburbs, I have really grown to love it here. There’s a surprisingly large philanthropic & young professional community, which I love because service is close to my heart. But, there’s also a great scene of farmer’s markets, vintage fairs, flea markets, and other small-town, home-grown events that make this big city in the middle of no where seem more like Main Street USA.

What’s NOT to love about the city of Chicago?!…(besides the cold winters – but I can deal!). Chicago is a breath-takingly beautiful city to walk around, I’m reminded of this everyday on my way to work at the Merchandise Mart. The food is unbelievable and it’s hard to keep up with all of the restaurants to try out. The people are friendly and there’s such a young culture of 20-30 somethings here. Last but not least the public transportation is UNBEATABLE (that’s right i said it), so much so that I even sold my car.

I call Chi-City home as well. We just bought in Logan Square and love the ‘hood. It’s trendy enough to have bars, niche restaurants and a cute square. But it’s also down-to-earth with families and regular professionals. It’s not as yuppy as Lincoln Park, but you could buy a mansion on my block and it’d be NBD.

I love living in DC and seeing the monuments every morning on my way to work (and taking spontaneous trips to the National Zoo on a Sunday afternoons).

    • Meg Bailey

yes, I’m in love with DC as well! I love being able to see the Washington Monument on my bus ride to work, and I get to live right next to the National Zoo.

  • instantphoebe

Sadly, not much. I’m in a mid-sized city, but we’re not a big destination by any means. So I guess what I love most is that whenever I fly (which is often), I usually can breeze through airport security in less than 5 minutes (sometimes there’s no one in line at all).

Once, I woke up at 10:45 a.m. My Southwest flight was at 11:30. I made it in time to board with the C group. It was both awful and awesome at the same time.

I live in Kalamazoo and I never really appreciated it until now.  There is so much history that I never knew about growing up.  Now that I live downtown, it’s so easy to participate in all of the historical and artistic events that happen in the city.  The city is also double college town, which can be fun.

I love my city — Roanoke, VA. We have four seasons (a must) and some of the best outdoor amenities around — tons of hiking and biking — and trails where I can go for a jog with the dog. Plus, there is good live music somewhere in town pretty much every night of the week. Nothing is better than working somewhere that has everything you love when you leave the office!

Ugg, this hits a nerve.  I spent the first half of my twenties in NYC (and LOVED it), but then moved back to my hometown of L.A. (where I’ve now been for a couple of years).  I have a love/hate relationship with L.A. (I prefer walking cities) but being near the family is very important to me.  Who knows what the future holds though, right?!

  • Fwoodward

I was born and raised in Phoenix and, even though I’ve lived in other places, this is and always will be home.  Sure, the summers feel like we’re 4 feet away from the sun, but I say it thins the herd.  If it weren’t for the barely habitable 3 months of summer here, everybody would move here because the other 9 months of the year enjoy the most gorgeous weather.  We have no hurricanes, no tornadoes, no earthquakes, no floods, nothing but blistering hot weather for 3 months.

  • Rachel

Denver is such a vibrant city, with a great music scene, lots of awesome craft breweries, and let’s not forget the Rocky Mountains in the backdrop. One of the best places to live, by far.

  • Katherine Elizabeth

I’ve recently relocated to Honolulu from Northern California, and every day I love it even more. It’s not exactly “hip” but the weather (OH MY Goodness, the weather) makes me never want to leave.

Los Angeles gets such a bad wrap but it’s honestly an incredible city. I’m finishing my twenties here and I am so grateful :) NC to DC to NYC to LA:)

San Diego is perfect. In addition to growing up here, I stayed for college (San Diego State University) and LOVE exploring my city as an adult. We have a great downtown scene, plus the beach, plus mountains to hike. I love that we’re never more than an hour drive from any season you want!

What I love about Houston, Texas: the amazing shopping, the delicious hole-in-the-wall restaurants, the different festivals that always pop up, and the beautiful museums!!

  • Natalia Contreras

You know how they say, don’t judge a book by its cover? Well I give you permission to do it just once. My name is Natasha, but the name of my blog is In Love With San Diego. I spend my free hours writing down all the reasons I love to call that beautiful city my home. I mean… who can complain? The weather is amazing (today is 10/26 and it’s 78 degrees out), the sights are gorgeous (I dare  you to walk around the beaches of La Jolla and not fall in love), and there’s just so much to do that my check list of things to see in my hometown is never ending! If you have a moment, I’d love for you to stop by: http://www.inlovewithsandiego.com
