Much like furnishing a new home, building a solid wardrobe once you’re in the real world can be both daunting and costly. Shopping for fun, trendy pieces versus saving and investing in classic items is a debate many of us struggle with, whether we’re new to receiving a paycheck or not. We constantly find ourselves with a growing pile of impulse purchases that we barely wear. Meanwhile, day after day, event after event, we expectantly return to the few quality items that always look classic and have been shown to stand the test of time. So which are these items are worth saving for? Well, with the help of Bradley Agather, author of style blog Luella and June, we’ve curated a list of 21 items every woman should have to get through her twenties. And because we know the economy is what it is, we’ve included a super budget-friendly item to get you by, as well as a more quality (read: costly) investment suggestion.

The Shoes

Ballet Flats: When heels simply won’t do, ballet flats are a must. They pair easily with just about anything. Not to mention, they’re as comfortable as they are chic!

Strappy Sandals: It’s impossible to get through summer without a pair of these. A classic leather pair will always be in style.

Black Heels: A good pair of black heels will last you a lifetime. Whether you’re headed to the office or out for cocktails, black heels are a must-have!

Running Shoes: These should be comfortable and provide great support whether you’re at the gym, hiking outdoors, or exploring a new city.

The Clothes

A Striped Tee: When it comes to Ts, a striped one is a must-have. It’s easy to wear, casual, and oh, so versatile! Throw it on with a pair of denim and ballet flats for a classic look, or go bold and mix it with a printed pant.

Cardigan: Whether you’re trying to stay warm or you just need a good layering piece, a cardigan is a wardrobe staple. Pair it with a fitted pencil skirt for the office, or, for the weekend, button it up over a classic white tee and jeans.

Tailored Blazer: Every closet should have a tailored jacket that can be worn with jeans or over a cocktail dress. To keep it feminine, be sure the silhouette is fitted.

Skinny Jeans: They go with everything. Enough said. Be sure to find a pair that fits you to a T.

Little Black Dress: Is there anything more classic than the LBD? The key here is to keep it simple. Add a statement jewelry piece and you’re good to go.

A Dress That’s Just for Fun: Once you’ve got your classic LBD, pick up a dress that’s just for fun. Something that at first glance might not seem totally practical, but it’s worth every penny because you feel good in it!

Tailored Skirt: Interviews, meetings, or dinner parties: a tailored skirt is the perfect staple for looking both dressed up and sophisticated.

Cold-Weather Coat: Even if you don’t live in a cold climate, who’s to say you won’t visit New York City, the Rocky Mountains, or perhaps more realistically, your relatives in Iowa over the holidays? It’s better to be prepared.

A Bra for You: Finding the right bra can be quite tricky. Start by getting yourself measured to find the correct size, and then choose a bra that’s comfortable and will work underneath a variety of different style tops.

A Bra for that Special Someone: Have some fun with this one! Lace? Neon? Whatever makes you feel the best!

No-Show Underwear: Sometimes even thongs won’t do the trick. For those lightweight fabrics and form fitting pieces, seamless panties are key. You’ll be surprised how often you’ll reach for a pair of these.

The Accessories

Leather Handbag: A leather handbag will last for years to come. It’s functional and chic. A medium-to-large size is ideal so that a girl-on-the-go can easily fit her iPad, iPhone, and all other daily essentials in here.

Clutch: Whether you’re headed to a cocktail party or a date-night at the movies, the clutch is the easiest way to dress up any look.

Weekender Bag: For those weekend getaways where a tote is just too small and your heavy-duty suitcase is too big.

Sunglasses: No matter if you’re a Jackie O. or an Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffanys, pick a shape and style that makes you feel like a star. (Not to mention, a good pair is essential for hiding those tired eyes!)

Understated Jewelry: Your essential accessory. The piece you wear from morning until bed time. You feel naked without it. Whether it’s a pair of earrings, your grandmother’s necklace, or a vintage ring, keep this one piece classic and simple.

Watch: You know what they say: punctuality is a virtue. A good watch will keep you on time, and it’s an excellent layering piece between piles of gold bangles.

Love the “to get by” and “to invest”. It’s so helpful – there are just some times where you can’t justify spending a lot on something, but then other times where you know you’ll wear that item all the time so it’s worth it!

  • ashleigh @ Jolie Jouel

Love this list! And the photo special with the two options for each item is genius.

    My jewelry blog: joliejouel.blogspot.com

I think this might be the best post you guys have had since the creation of The Everygirl!! More like this PUHLEASE!!!!!

    This is a fantastic post

  • Sarah Pickell

such a wonderful post!! I love the “to get by” and “to invest” aspect…makes it simple to figure out which items are more timeless and therefore better to invest in, versus of the moment items. LOVE this!! definitely would want to see some more like this!

  • Heather Tackett

By far one of my favorite posts! Thanks for these… love the list, and options!

  • http://twosixandcounting.blogspot.com Liz (26 and Counting)

Love the side by side ”go to” and “invest”!

  • http://twitter.com/aliciasturdy Alicia Sturdy

    LOVE THIS GUIDE! Thank you!

  • http://lisasanchez.tumblr.com Lisa Sanchez

This list is fantastic—especially the budget and investment picks. So pretty and practical!

  • http://www.champagnereveries.blogspot.com/ Lauren M. Ferreira

Great list!  Is that a k. slademade clutch in the photo?  It looks like the one I’ve had my eye on :)

  • http://twitter.com/printsnpeonies Elle

Nailed it! Genius genius with the side/by/side. For jewelry (my favorite :) I’d add a classic pair of diamond or CZ studs, a statement cocktail ring (costume, gifted, or Grandma’s) a senitmental pendant (for good luck, strength or just the good memories), pearls, and crazy fun chandelier earrings!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1502626 Catherine Ahern

LOVE this list! One thing to add: a good supportive sports bra to go with my favorite Nike Frees. :) I finally invested in one, and oh-my-goodness, it was so worth it!

  • instantphoebe

Great picks! I actually love some of the “to get by” picks more than the splurges!

If you do plan to start running, though, I would recommend getting fitted at a store that specializes in running shoes. They watch how you run, what your gait is like, and pick shoes (or inserts) for you accordingly. Nothing is worse than a pricey mistake you can’t return that gives you joint pain!

  • http://twitter.com/statestreetedit Jessica McSweeney

This post made my day – those Aldo strappy sandals need to be mine ASAP!

  • Emily

Had to chime in to say I love this too. Honestly, I always love these types of lists, but the photo feature is amazing. It’s nice to finally see ‘to get by’ pieces that are at ‘to get by’ prices!

  • Abigail Sussman

This is such a phenomenal list! Thanks again, girls!

  • http://classylilsassy.com/ Jaime Lee

What a wonderful list. love the understated jewelry suggestion. There is one thing  missing, that makes every girl look polished. Get an amazing new hair cut and a few subtle highlights- at a high-end salon. I got my hair professionally highlighted for the first time when I turned 22.  It gave my look that extra spark.

  • http://www.lifeuncluttered.org/ Lauren L

This is a great list and honestly all these pieces can work into your 30s as well!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000225467609 Amanda Goodhue

Love these picks– if your closet doesn’t include all of these, better get to shopping! :)

  • Meagan S

This is great. What about your thirties?

  • http://www.blogcurator.blogspot.com/ dervla @ The Curator

love this! Not in my 20s anymore but the advice is still relevant.

    • Ksasek79

      Agreed! ;)

I love wearing my nana’s cameo necklace.  And a good watch to keep perfect time is a must.  And I will also say getting a good yard sale wardrobe on a budget is great too.

What a great collection!! Impressed by the “To Get By” piece choices.

  • Sg

FYI, the running shoe thing should be re-evaluated. Nike’s might be more expensive but they are terrible for running, the only reason they are more pricey is because they are more “stylish” the Asics would be better for your pocket AND your feet in the long run. Plus you should get new running shoes every year to avoid injury, so spending a lot of money on shoes just because they are more attractive is a little silly.

  • AllyBee

This was probably the most useful article I have read to date. You made it clear, to the point, and easy to understand. Other magazines and articles will add a lot of fluff and sugar coat it and you guys just simplified it enough to where anyone would understand. Thank you so much :)

fantastic recommendations, thank you! i especially appreciate that the “to invest” pieces are still reasonable!! no $5000 bags etc. :)

  • http://twitter.com/JennySueMakeup JennySueMakeup

What a thorough list!  As long as I have a good mascara and cheek and lip stain, I feel put together. Oh, and a pair of white jeans for the summer.

I have come to realise that it is far better to invest in timeless pieces. So long I’ve spent money to have lots of cute/cheap things and now it is totalyl quality over quantity for me. Also makes me feel responsible and grown up as I am buying something I couldn’t afford when I was a student. Saying that, I don’t believe that good pieces have to be so very expensive. I love to buy things in charity and vintage shops as you know that they haev stood the test of time and are really reasonably priced.

  • Lanessa Hickman

    Love it! Absolutely wonderful!

Just a heads up to those who are looking at the running shoes – DO NOT INVEST in a pair of Nikes. Nor am I suggesting to “get by” with those specific Asics. As an elite athlete, I’ve worn Nikes, Adidas, New Balance, Asics, Saucony, the works. Nike and Adidas shoes generally wear out REALLY FAST. They spend a lot of marketing and they look amazing. If you’re not worried about running often and real hard at the gym, then get them by all means. But if you are worried about your alignment and arches or back pains and overall running comfort, I’d recommend getting fitted for some of the better shoes (NB, Asics, Saucony). For a good 8 years, I hated running because after 2 minutes, my back would hurt as if I were 50 (I was around 14 at the time). After having been fitted for the right pair of Asics, I’ve NEVER had any back pains from running. I am glad to say now that I LOVE running. My arches don’t hurt, my back doesn’t hurt. I feel strong! This page is great, but trust me, ladies. When it comes to running shoes, if you really mean to break a sweat, get fitted for the shoe. Don’t just pick the price or the brand. Good luck!

  • Janinek31986

This article is sad. I’ve heard these items listed on millions of must-have lsts and none of the above are specific to being in your twenties. Sunglasses? Ballet flats? Everyone wears those, jus look outside! This is nothing we already dont know.

Am I the only one who finds ballet flats uncomfortable, unflattering, and usually poorly fitting?

No arch support, not enough padding, tend to bunch up on my feet in the center, and make my legs look stumpy and my feet look ducklike.

how about something for the woman in her 50′s and wants a little help?
