Three Looks: Courtney Kerr of What Courtney Wore

A new season is officially upon us.  Fall is here and my closet has never been happier.  The transition of leather, faux fur, ankle booties, and opaque tights into my closet has me giddy to see the autumn leaves change color.  But with the excitement of a new season and new, fashionable options, I can’t help but feel a little sorry for all those summer purchases I have to retire until the warmer weather returns.  But, wait, do I?! In a clever twist of events, I took three of my favorite summer trends and “autumn-ized” them, allowing me to get more bang for my buck and create even more fall outfits!

Trend 1: Peplum Tops

These adorable and universally flattering tops were a staple in my closet this summer. I could mix these sleeveless tops with anything: skirts, shorts, and skinny, colorful jeans. But for Fall, I am treating my peplum tops like a vest.  Try layering one over a button down like I did, or when the weather gets even cooler, wear a fitted turtleneck underneath.  Paired with leather shorts (and eventually some opaque tights) this look is ready for a night on the town.

Trend 2: Florals

Remember that infamous line in “Devil Wears Prada” where Meryl Streep says, “Florals for Spring? Groundbreaking.”  Well, Meryl might have been right that florals aren’t the most original option for the warmer months, but they are a bit more unexpected come Fall.  To wear this trend as the temperatures drop, toughen up this sweet, girly print with a utility jacket and some leather.

Trend 3: Neon

When I think of fall, I typically think of dark colors and a sea of black. It’s rare to see bright colors emerge. If you were brave enough to look like a walking highlighter this summer, then your closet probably looks a lot like mine and is full of neon. But can these fluoro colors survive in the Fall? Retire the neon shorts, but hold onto the bright outerwear items.  Pair your favorite neon blazer with a dark jersey dress and “autumn-ize” it with some rocker, studded ankle booties.

Thought about ordering that dress but haven’t because I worried it would be too square shaped like the summer stripe from StyleMint. Looks cute. Is it stretchy?

It is stretchy, but it runs small and is form-fitting. I ordered this when it came out because I couldn’t resist the pattern.
