We’ve all been there. It’s 3:30 p.m. and your girlfriend invites you to one of the hottest places in town for happy hour after work. Of course she asks you today, when your too-casual khakis or ultra-conservative business suit just won’t fit the occasion.

It’s hard to strike the delicate balance between office chic and post-work glam. Here to help guide us to a place of day-to-night zen is DC-based lifestyle blogger and health policy coordinator Krystal Knight of The Feisty House. In a city where networking is everything, Krystal spends a lot of time at happy hours in DC’s eclectic neighborhoods, and her workday attire has to be able to transition from boardroom to bar. Here Krystal shows us three easy looks that you can wear from day to night. Plus, all of the pieces are affordable! How’s that for doing double duty?

Go Bold: An easy way to punch up an office outfit is to trade in your classic black or navy trousers for pants in a bold color or print. I love these lipstick red pants from Zara. The classic silhouette is work-appropriate, but the color makes them easy to wear in a variety of after-work settings. Paired with a polka-dot blouse and pumps in an unexpected color, the look is classic without being too stuffy.

Mix Pleats and Prints: Another simple way to create an effortless day-to-night look is to mix prints in coordinating shades. Keep the colors muted and similar so that you don’t end up being a distraction (after all, you want the focus to be on the awesome work you do, right?). Pleats are a great way to modestly add a flirty aspect to your outfit that will work well once you’ve left the office.

Be Pretty in Peplum: In my opinion, the peplum silhouette is the best thing to happen to career fashion in a long time! Peplum tops and skirts add curves without being too form-fitting, making them key pieces for the office. A peplum top like this watercolor-inspired one from H&M is perfect for meetings and for getting drinks with the girls after hours.

You guys nailed it. Colored pants are my quick fix!

I want them ALL!  And I love that they’re work-friendly outfits, too.  Nothing too overtly sexy, but definitely beautiful.

Yay, I love to see beautiful DC represented! The second look is my favorite, but I really like the way the third photographed in Chinatown–very cool.

Thanks for introducing me to a new(-to-me) DC style blogger!

Great feature! Krystal looks fantastic in all 3 looks. I think my favourite is probably the first though – I have a soft spot for polka dots. :)

  • Eleanor Busing

I love the second look especially- so great. But with my luck, I’m never wearing anything remotely as cute the day I get an impromptu post-work drinks invite. My tips are to keep a pair of “outfit-saving” feels in your desk drawer, and a bright lipstick in your purse at all times. The rest is just attitude!

I totally agree! I keep 2 bold lipsticks at my desk for when I’m caught off-guard lol

  • Sue Cantrell

I LOVE the purple top in #3 where is that from?!

      I got it at H&M ;)

I love all these looks (especially that ombre yellow skirt)!

But depending on your industry (anything not fashion or creative related) I would say with the exception of possibly the last outfit they aren’t really work wearable. A little bit too much for most work places. Which is unfortunate because I would love to be seen in all of them.

I’m a huge fan of the Feisty House!! Glad to see Krystal’s style broadcasted her on the Everygirl!! I love the pleated skirt and the peplum top! Congratulations :)

I love all of these looks! I think the last is my favorite, mainly because I’m currently obsessed with peplum and brightly colored pumps.

Nice looks, Krystal! Favorite one being #2. Big fan of pleats and prints combined together.

Really cute outfits!  My office is too conservative though, so I couldn’t wear any of these looks except maybe the third with a cardi or blazer (although that might ruin the peplum effect).

I usually just wear a sleeveless dress or cute shell tucked into a pencil skirt with a jacket or cardigan on top that I can just remove after work.  You can always keep a pair of cute heels under your desk, too.

as a vehement t-shirt wearer, krystal gave me awesome advice during the shoot: you can wear blouses with anything you would normally wear with t-shirts. it was a big aha moment and one I won’t forget when I think I have to look super casual during a shoot.
