Everyone—and we mean everyone—is buzzing about Ella Yelich-O’Connor, who goes by the stage name Lorde. Not only has her hit song “Royals” been played over 7 million times on Spotify, but she also just became the first woman to top the alternative chart in 17 years—not bad for a 16-year-old gal from New Zealand. Despite being so young, Lorde has voice that is more mature than her years. When she sings, her delivery is calm and confident and those vocals provide the perfect accompaniment to her music, which is a mixture of electronic-pop and hip-hop beats. However, Lorde isn’t just about vocals and music—her lyrics are deceivingly thoughtful. If you listen closely to “Royals,” you’ll hear her acknowledge the lack of depth in popular music and her rejection of the materialism often associated with certain groups of famous individuals—a fairly heavy subject for such a young woman.
After you listen to a few of Lorde’s songs, we’re sure you’ll understand why we have fallen for her updated version of pop music and we are certain she’ll only get better with time. Be sure to check out Lorde’s debut album, Pure Heroine, which comes out at the end of September.
