30 Day Challenge: Drink 8 Eight Oz. Glasses of Water Each Day

There’s something to be said for the New Years spirit; like a bolt of lightning, a new year brings the year’s potential to your doorstep and electrifies us with inspiration.

Where will I go? What should I do? Can I? Should I? Could I?

Yes, to all of the possibilities.

We closed out 2014 by tidying up those last bits of to-do lists to end the year with a feeling of accomplishment. We worked hard last year to challenge our daily activities by injecting some life into old routines; taking time to learn and be proactive about careers and lifestyles has only worked to help us grow into more confident versions of ourselves.

Now we’ve got a clean slate with 2015 arriving punctually as always, and we’re riding that wave of inspiration that comes with the ball drop. Many people scoff at resolutioners but the truth is, this kind of collective spirit is contagious and the support of a community takes the edge off setting the pace for an entire year.

Whatever you have in store for 2015–be it weddings, reunions, big trips, etc.–it’s best to start the year off on the right foot! We’ll be doing a new challenge every month that works on self-improvement in different and attainable ways. This month, we want to take our challenge back to the basics, we’re talking on a molecular level: H20. Yup, that old adage has come back to remind you that water, is important now, and every other day of your life, so we want to get on track starting day one.

People usually make pretty lofty goals for fitness, health, and weight loss, most of which they give up within a few weeks. Drinking more water is one of the best things you can do for your health for so many reasons but this time around when you plan to put back eight glasses, you’ve got a community of supporters (us) to remind you and cheer you on.

If that isn’t enough to convince you, let’s consider a few of the other benefits of making water drinking your new favorite habit, shall we?

1. Hydration– This seems obvious, but consider the value water has to each cell in your body: Winter is a season fraught with dehydration because if we aren’t sweating, we aren’t as easily reminded that we’re thirsty. But since water makes up approximately 60 percent of your body, it’s no wonder your cells need it to function their best, and by the time they communicate this to you via chapped lips, your cells are already suffering. Don’t punish your cells–it isn’t their fault!

2. Weight Loss– Water is a necessity, and pie is not. So if you have a glass of water before each meal, you’re more likely to feel full before you even get to the dessert round of dinner. Three meals later, you’re almost halfway to your water goal and that doesn’t even include in-between sipping. That makes this goal as easy as that extra serving of pie you didn’t have! Also, you’re avoiding the false queues of hunger that dehydration can trigger, keeping you hydrated and satiated.

3. Brighter Smile- Speaking of dining out, we love a glass of red or a rum and coke as much as the next happy-hour participant, but did you ever consider what those fluids are doing to your pearly whites? We’ve had enough wine-stained blouses to know that it’s a terror to get out of your clothes, so opting out of a glass here an there will spare your teeth the harsh acids that damage your enamel. Oh and extra bonus: Water is zero calories—can your skinny margarita top that? We didn’t think so.

    I made this (64 oz. of water daily minimum) a priority in 2014, and I’m proud to say it’s one of the best habits I formed in 2014. Going into 2015 hoping to continue the habit! –> PRO TIP: Download an app like “Waterlogged” onto your phone to help you keep track of your water intake as you drink it. It really helps you remember how many water bottles you drank each day!!! 🙂

    I’m in!

    I carry a 32oz. bottle with me! If it’s in front of you, it’s A LOT easier to remember to drink up! And once you start, it’s hard to stop because you’re body is craving something it naturally needs! Now I get headaches if I don’t drink enough water, which is better than headaches from coffee withdrawals.

    • This has been my latest investment– a big bottle I like looking at– it’s helped a ton already!

    I’m so excited for this challenge! Such a great good habit to kick off the new year with. I typically drink a LOT of water everyday, I tend to keep large 32 oz. bottles at my office and in my apartment and just refill throughout the day. However, the past two months with crazy holiday schedules I have found it harder to maintain the habit (shame on me because when you’re busy, that’s when you need to hydrate the most!) so I’m looking forward to re-instating it with y’all! I’m hoping to also drink more cucumber and lemon water.

  • The easiest way for me to stay hydrated is to have a reusable travel cup with me all the time! I feel silly buying water and for some reason I love having the straw rather than just a bottle!

  • I keep a liter bottle of water at my desk and drink one before lunch and one after plus a glass or two at dinner/after work. I’ve also opted for getting water at restaurants (hey, it’s free!) and it’s quite simple now to get my 64 oz. in per day. It takes some getting used to, but I think it’s one of the easiest habits to stick with. Also, when travelling or deviating from your normal routine, always keep a bottle of water handy so you don’t forget.

    I realized I drink more water if I can use a straw. So I got a Contigo mug from Target. It’s clear (which is awesome because I’m not a fan of the obnoxious sports containers) and holds 20oz. I fill a container of water with lemons, limes and sometimes cucumbers a few times a week so I can easily refill the mug. It unreal how much more water I drink!

  • I love this challenge! I drink approx 3 liters of water everyday, and keep a massive bottle at my desk to constantly refill. Without it, I feel tired, headachy and my skin looks ashy. People compliment my skin, and I credit the water. I am living proof of how important this is!!

    Just found this website! Very excited for the 30 day challenges! I have been aiming for a gallon of water a day, which is hard to meet on a daily basis, especially when I am busy and don’t want to be running to the bathroom every 30 minutes! Some days even 64 oz is hard, but I am up for the challenge.

    I use a water alarm app to remind me, and the fitbit app to track how much I am drinking!
