7 Fashion Trends to Expect in 2019

2018 was… something.

Some huge fashion moments happened: we all watched Meghan Markle’s timeless Givenchy wedding gown walk down the aisle, Blake Lively did a full press tour in exclusively pantsuits, and Rihanna blessed each and every one of us when she dressed as a high-fashion pope at the Met Gala — hallelujah.

But there are also some things that need to stay in the past with 2018 (tiny sunglasses, I’m looking at you).

Here are some of the biggest trends you’ll see as the year moves forward, and all of the inspiration for how to work them yourself (hint: you probably have some of them in your closet already!).

1. Head-to-Toe Beige

Designers’ 2019 collections had one color in common — or perhaps, a lack thereof. Monochrome beige and pieces in the color of your favorite trench are going to be everywhere all year long.

This is a neutral-lover’s dream. Swap out your navy pieces for your earth-toned ones for a lighter look. Already own a trench coat? Break it out of storage and give it the wear time it deserves.

2. Bold Shoulders

Big, gathered puffy sleeves will be at the tops of blouses and dresses alike this year. These aren’t your mom’s shoulder pads, but rather a revamped version that’s totally wearable.

Swap your classic button-down for a puff-sleeved t-shirt to easily incorporate the ultra-feminine detail into your day-to-day life.

3. Top Handle Bags

According to Elle, Saks Fifth Avenue Fashion Director Roopal Patel called these “the ‘it’ accessory of 2019.” With a structured design that you can dress up or down, they’re the perfect addition to your bag collection.

Switch out your go-to crossbody for an easy, versatile option that you’ll be able to wear all year long.

4. Boho Vibes

Fashion month was full of knits, fringe, and flowy pieces that can be worn anywhere from the office to a poolside vacation. Warm colors were paired with accessories like woven totes, pendant necklaces, and lots of crochet to achieve an ultimate relaxed, cool-girl vibe — and hey, loose clothes are always a trend we can get on board with.

When the weather warms up, throw your laptop and keys in a woven tote to pair with your normal workwear, or trade your usual T-shirt dress for one with drapey sleeves and a looser fit.

5. Animal Print Everything

We saw a resurgence of animal print in 2018, and it isn’t going anywhere in 2019. We’re going to see animal print beyond your basic cheetah — with an emphasis on python, nothing is off limits.

Treat animal print like a neutral — trade a basic t-shirt for one that incorporates the animal print of your choosing, or your favorite black booties for ones with python or cheetah print.

6. Standout Hoops

Hoops are a staple piece of jewelry — they never quite go out of style, but trends with them tend to vary from season to season. This year is going to be filled with unconventional versions of the classics with geometric, chunky shapes.

7. (More) Menswear for Women

2018 was the year of the blazer — we saw people wear them everywhere from the red carpet to work (love a good blazer paired with denim!). This year, the menswear trend will continue, often with matching sets and pastel colors.
