Sun Day, Fun Day: Beach Day Essentials

Summer is flying by fast, but we’re not quite ready to give up the season just yet. So come Saturday and Sunday, you bet we’re waking up early (OK, hitting the snooze button maybe once or twice); putting on our summer uniform (bathing suit and sundress), driving to the beach with the top down and blasting LFO; and overall, seas-ing the day to the fullest.

In fact, we tackle this day trip so often that our seaside routine is practically nailed down to a science. With the help of total beach babe Grasie of Style Me Grasie, we’re sharing our chic beach day essentials: what to wear to the beach, what to put on afterward for your next activity, and what to pack in your tote bag to get through it all.

GET THE LOOK: Old Navy bathing suit | Mr. Kate necklace | Mr. Kate rings | Warby Parker sunglasses

Don’t feel like baring your belly, or ready for a change from your typical two-piece swim attire? Choose a classic one-piece that can successfully stand alone in flattering multiple body types. We love the all-black color and retro-inspired, sleek shape of Grasie’s pick!

Sunscreen: Sunscreen is a vital deterrent against the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays on all days, but especially when you’ll be in the sun for a long period of time. Grasie stocks up on MD Complete Skin Clearing Sunscreen—light, non-greasy and won’t clog pores—to apply regularly on her face, and Protect All Over Sunscreen for everywhere else that is exposed. It’s generally advised to apply sunscreen generously and to rub it in thoroughly, as well as reapply frequently (i.e., every two hours and after contact with moisture or water).

Hairbrush: Don’t let the thoughts of frustratingly tangled hair put a damper on diving into the refreshing waves nearby. Post-beach silky strands can still be yours if you bring along the right detangling brush, such as Grasie’s top pick: the Tangle Teezer. It works for wet or dry hair and comes in a compact size to take up less beach bag-space. For a little extra assistance, pair the brush with a detangler formula with micro-conditioning finesse.

Body Mist: Feeling so hot and dry that you half-expect a tumbleweed to appear on the scene? A spray or two of a light, relieving body mist, such as Refresh Aloe Cucumber Mist, will perk up your body and hair with its natural ingredients, including extracts of aloe, cucumber oil, green tea, and more.

Sunglasses: Sunglasses are an Everygirl’s best friend in the summer. (We’ve thoroughly argued our case here.) This particular pair from Warby Parker has polarized lens with glare reduction and UV protection, thereby earning a coveted spot in your beach accessory crew.

Reading Material: Leave the work at home; it’s time for leisure reading only! Catch up on your magazines or other easy reads.

Jewelry: To jazz up a floaty summer dress worn over your bathing suit, also pack a couple of delicate jewelry pieces, such as these long-chained beauties from Mr. Kate, for an effortless and elevated post-beach look.

GET THE LOOK: Old Navy sundress (similar here) | Urban Outfitters sandals (sold out; similar here) | Old Navy tote bag

The classic sundress is an unerring one-piece wonder and versatile enough for multiple wears. Though Grasie simply threw this funky patterned number over her bathing suit, donned a pair of studded sandals, and repacked her spacious, waterproof tote bag, we can imagine a dressier look by switching in a pair of colorful block heels and picking up an oversize clutch. Boom.
