Watch This: WILD Starring Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon, the big screen’s sweetheart, has left us stunned in her latest role as Cheryl Strayed in WILD. Raw, complicated, and mesmerizing, Witherspoon shines as the tortured Strayed, conflicted and struggling to find herself. In Strayed’s 2012 memoir, the bestselling author chronicled her terror as she forged ahead on a journey that maddened, strengthened, and ultimately healed her unbreakable spirit.

WILD is an inspirational true story of self-discovery and redemption. Strayed endured years of heroin abuse and reckless behavior; when the dissolution of her marriage and the memories of her mother haunting her every move, Strayed made the rash decision to hike more than a thousand miles on the Pacific Coast Trail—on her own and with no experience. At 26, her trek into the wilderness and subsequent soul-searching quest gave way to a quiet determination to find her way. Filmed in Oregon and California, the movie was made on the actual Pacific Coast Trail, the toughest and wildest through-trail in America. Gritty and unrefined Witherspoon (as Strayed) became our heroine as she attacked the trail and her own heartache.

Academy award winning Witherspoon chose to produce WILD through her production company Pacific Standard, which is dedicated to promoting strong female roles. Uncompromising in her approach, Witherspoon went all in as she told L.A. reporters in a film Q&A, “I just knew that Cheryl had told the whole truth and I had to be brave enough as an artist to tell the whole truth too. We pushed the sexuality, we pushed the violence, and sometimes it’s there and sometimes it’s not. But you gotta try to push to that edge.” Co-written by Nick Hornby and Cheryl Strayed, and directed by Jean-Marc Vallée (of Dallas Buyers Club fame) this film is unflinching in it’s portrayal of a woman wild and, ultimately, freed.

“That it was enough to trust that what I’d done was true.” #lifeiswild

WILD opened in select theatres on December 5, and will continue to release throughout the month. Check here to find out if the film is playing in your city.
