One by one, the same sweater started showing up on my feed. Not quite a crewneck but not a full turtleneck either, it landed somewhere in between: the Rollneck Sweater, as J.Crew has long called it. A quick tap brought me to the source and confirmed what my scrolling had already hinted at: The sweater is just as beloved now as it was more than 35 years ago, when it first appeared in the brand’s 1988 catalog. Since the sweater resurfaced, it’s been inescapable. So inescapable that J.Crew has continued to release rollneck after fabulous rollneck, slightly remixing the design every time.
With so many colors, stripes, and marled styles to choose from, it’s hard to know which rollneck belongs in your closet. But before you just add them all to your cart (though it may be very tempting), we’re breaking down all of the rollnecks in J.Crew’s collection, plus showing you what they look like on two different body types. The Rory Gilmore-esque perfectly oversized sweater is finally within reach. Below, your unofficial guide to J.Crew rollneck sweaters.
What is the J.Crew Rollneck?
If you’ve ever looked back at photos of your parents when they were young, enviously eyeing their sweaters, the rollneck is pretty much the modern solution. It has that effortlessly oversized, relaxed vintage quality that feels so difficult to get your hands on today. You may have bought it in 2026, but if you want to pass off the 100-percent cotton sweater with its curled, unstitched neckline and slouchy fit as straight from the ’80s, you’re definitely good. In fact, the sweater originally launched in J.Crew’s 1988 catalog.

Why Is This Sweater So Popular?
Part of the sweater’s appeal is that it feels slightly unexpected. The fit is oversized enough to be cozy, but the rollneck collar is non-committal in the best way. It strikes the perfect balance—structured enough to look polished, yet relaxed enough for a weekend coffee run. When you see the sweater on someone, you think: Wow, that looks like the perfect sweater.
We’d be remiss to not acknowledge that this sweater has gotten so popular in large part because of the marketing surrounding it. J.Crew rolled (pun intended) out the relaunch of this sweater in 2025 with a splashy campaign featuring familiar faces like Benito Skinner and Maggie Rogers. And now, you can hardly open Instagram or TikTok without seeing an influencer wearing it.
However, this is not to say it doesn’t deserve its love. People are flooding their comments with “Please bring back [insert sold-out colorway here]!!!!” and reviewers rave about the fit and comfort. The sweater is 100-percent heritage cotton, so it will be a piece you can have forever. And at $100, it feels like an investment, but not an outrageous one.

J.Crew 2025 Rollneck Sweater
The 2025 Rollneck is, in fact, the blueprint for the rollneck trend everywhere. Originally launched last year, we owe her the fabulous variants that followed. It has the most classic silhouette of all the J.Crew rollnecks and comes in a wide range of colors and striped patterns.
Lauren’s Review
Not to be dramatic, but I can’t explain how chic I felt after putting the 2025 Rollneck on. In the middle of the J.Crew dressing room, I somehow transformed into Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy herself. I love the oversized fit of this sweater, though I’m wearing an XS in the photo, and I would be curious to try on an XXS to compare the sizing. It’s literally the perfect, effortless sweater to throw on all fall and winter.

Jessica’s Review
I’m going to cut straight to the chase and tell you that after finally trying these on after a year of letting them percolate in my ever-growing fashion wishlist, the striped one came home with me. Much like Lauren, I couldn’t help but feel impeccably chic the instant I put the 2025 Rollneck on.
I am incredibly picky about both the fit and fabric makeup of my sweaters, and the 2025 Rollneck has everything I could dream of. It’s slouchy without being frumpy, and the 100-percent heritage cotton is both substantial and lightweight enough to not be too hot. If you’re between sizes, I’d opt for the smaller one with this.

J.Crew Tiny Rollneck Sweater
The 2025 Rollneck’s Gen-Z little sister has officially entered the chat, and boy, was she met with mixed reactions on the internet. This quarter-zip sweater is a shrunken version of the classic. It brings a fun, slightly younger touch to the Rollneck collection.
Lauren’s Review
Personally, as someone whose entire wardrobe was based on Emma Chamberlain in 2018, her being the face of the launch had me immediately on board. I will say that I would recommend sizing down with this one! I didn’t dislike how the XS fit, but it doesn’t give the cropped look the models on the website have. This sweater might not have the lasting timelessness of the 2025 Rollneck, but I still think it’s such a fun addition to any fall or winter wardrobe.

Jessica’s Review
I don’t understand why this sweater has so many haters. People said we don’t need it, or it’s too trendy, or it’s too cropped, or Emma Chamberlain isn’t a fit for J.Crew. Well, as a fashion editor, I love when brands adapt to growing audiences and try new things. Gen Z is just getting to the point of having J.Crew money, so why not do something to try to capture them? And as a “zillennial” myself, I seriously adore this sweater—but if you don’t, that’s OK too!
Before I went to try these on in the store, I already owned this sweater in pink in an XL. I heard that sizing down might provide a more fitted look, so I tried on the large in this stunning red stripe, and I was absolutely obsessed. If I didn’t already own one, this would’ve come home with me over the classic 2025 Rollneck.

J.Crew Rollneck Reversible Cardigan
What’s better than one rollneck sweater? Obviously, two rollneck sweaters. And that’s exactly what you get with the Rollneck Reversible Cardigan. Wear it with the buttons at the front for a classic cardigan look, or turn it around for a tighter, sleeker rollneck look.
Lauren’s Review
Now this one must be popular, because it was the hardest J.Crew rollneck to find in my size. There are a few different colorways, and while I don’t think I would opt for this green-and-black one personally, I did love the fit. I feel like I would have to take this one out on a test drive to see if anyone would question why the buttons are on the back of my sweater, but from the front, it looked great!

Jessica’s Review
The Rollneck Reversible Cardigan is probably the furthest from my personal style, but I still liked it. I think they could probably make anything in their heritage cotton and I would be sold. It’s just so soft and high quality, which was evident in this sweater as well. The store only had XL, so I’d be curious to see what this is like on me in a size large for a more fitted silhouette. Also, in my brain, this is two sweaters in one. Meaning it’s half price. Girl math.

Designer Collaboration J.Crew Rollnecks

In 2025, J.Crew launched five unique rollneck sweaters made in collaboration with five American designers. Each one reimagined the rollneck with a touch of their signature style, and the internet immediately fell in love. Buci, Collina Strada, Tanner Collins, Eckhaus La Tia, and Patrick Taylor all designed their own unique creations with that classic rollneck energy.
I managed to get my hands on the Buci and Tanner Collins collabs. While I wouldn’t say they’re capsule-wardrobe staples, I get compliments every time I leave the house in them. If you’re craving a sweater that makes a statement this fall, one of their designer collabs could be for you.

Is the J.Crew Rollneck Worth It?
Lauren’s Verdict
If it isn’t clear by now, my deep dive into J.Crew rollneck sweaters only reaffirmed my obsession with the collection. I don’t think you need to have every single silhouette in your closet, and I would definitely recommend trying them on in-store for the perfect fit. But in my mind, the J.Crew Rollneck is 2026’s little black dress—something every girl needs on hand in her closet.
Jessica’s Verdict
Whether you opt for a fun stripe or unique style or the classic rollneck, you know that this is a sweater you can have in your closet forever. In an age where it’s increasingly hard to find clothing in natural fibers, investing in a $100 sweater that you will wear again and again (without it falling apart) is a safe bet for your wardrobe. Personally, I love the J.Crew Rollnecks so much, and I would absolutely consider buying a couple more. They are soft, high-quality, and fit exactly how you want a sweater to fit. Plus, as a sweaty girl, finding a great heavyweight cotton sweater is even more luxurious than wool or cashmere.
