The third book in the Fourth Wing series may have dropped this week—coming in at a whopping 577 pages (with some very tight margins, I might add)—but I know some of you have already devoured every single word. This highly anticipated release means that when you finish reading, you will once again have to wait at least a year to see the characters you’ve been obsessing over since 2023.

Finishing a book you’ve been waiting years for is bittersweet. Not only is it tough saying goodbye to a beloved world for a little while, but there’s also the looming threat of a book slump. Whatever you pick up next has some big shoes to fill, and if it doesn’t deliver, you might find yourself in a cycle of DNF after DNF. If you’re not ready to let go of the Fourth Wing universe and want a book that captures its enemies-to-lovers energy, wartime stakes, or, of course, dragons, here’s a list of recommendations to get you through. Spoilers for Fourth Wing and Iron Flame ahead.

Heartless Hunter

If your favorite part of the Fourth Wing series was the enemies-to-lovers tension paired with forced proximity (thanks to Violet bonding with the mate of Xaden’s dragon), Heartless Hunter will have you hooked. The story follows Rune, an undercover witch and vigilante fighting to save witches from execution. By day, she’s a vapid socialite; by night, she’s the Crimson Moth, smuggling witches out of the New Republic. To keep her cover, she must team up with Gideon, a witch hunter sworn to destroy her kind. As their partnership unfolds, Rune begins to suspect there’s more to Gideon than meets the eye. The second book in this duology is also released on February 18, so you won’t have to wait long to dive into the rest of the story.

The Serpent and the Wings of Night

If there were a Venn Diagram of Twilight and Fourth Wing fans, it would be more of a circle, and The Serpent and the Wings of Night would sit right in the center. While it doesn’t have dragons, it has vampires with wings, which is a close second. Oraya, the human daughter of the Nightborn vampire king, has survived in a world that constantly tries to kill her. Her only hope of gaining enough power to protect herself is to win the Kejari, a deadly tournament hosted by the goddess of death. To survive, she allies with Raihn, a dangerous vampire who also happens to be her biggest competitor.

By book three, wyverns (mythical creatures similar to dragons) enter the story, bringing epic aerial battles reminiscent of The Empyrean Saga. One Dark Window

In Fourth Wing, characters can communicate with their dragons in their heads. In One Dark Window, Elspeth Spindle shares her mind with a sinister presence she calls the Nightmare (not quite as fun…). Her kingdom is cursed, and the only way to cure it is to reunite 12 magical Providence cards. Teaming up with Ravyn, the king’s nephew and a captain of a dangerous group of men, Elspeth must collect the cards while fighting to keep the Nightmare from taking over her mind and grappling with her growing feelings for Ravyn.
