I know it’s a tad problematic, but I have to be honest—I love a rivalry between two talented women. Like, two gals who are super different competing for the same thing, each pushing the other beyond what they thought they were capable of? That’s my cup of tea. I’ve been on the bring-back-female-rivalry train for quite a while now, and the rest of the internet finally seems to be jumping on board. This is, of course, thanks to Wicked.
In case you’re unfamiliar with the story behind the movie musical that’s living rent-free in everyone’s heads these days, Wicked follows two witches at Shiz University: Glinda and Elphaba. Glinda is bubbly and popular, while Elphaba is more introverted and thoughtful. The two women immediately clash, leading to the earworm track that is Loathing. Of course, Glinda and Elphaba don’t stay rivals for long once they realize they have a common enemy—but when they first meet, they hate each other.
Girl vs. girl rivalries as iconic as Glinda and Elphaba’s are hard to find these days, even if you’re actively looking for one. However, there are a few people who are better at finding people to push and motivate them through… mutual dislike… than others. Turns out, your zodiac sign can actually be a huge predictor of whether or not you’ll have a rival. So, whether you’re a Glinda or an Elphaba, these are the zodiac signs most likely to have a rivalry like the one featured in Wicked.
Taurus
Here’s the thing about Taurus signs: They might not be as fiery or assertive as an Aries or a Leo, but they love to hold a grudge. Their stubborn nature means that if they don’t like someone, they will stick to that opinion for as long as they possibly can. If you’re a Taurus, you may already have a workplace rival who inspires you to be your best self… simply because you want to be nothing like them. If you do find yourself in constant competition with a coworker or friend, remember that while you don’t have to like everyone, you’ll never get ahead if you stay stuck in your ways. Like Elphaba, you may need to get on board with whatever’s popular from time to time.
Leo
If Glinda were a zodiac sign, she would totally be a Leo. Leos love to be the center of attention, they know their own strengths like the back of their hand, and they’re not afraid to show the world what they’ve got. While Leos are usually well-meaning in their quest for social attention, sometimes that energy can rub people the wrong way, leading to rivalries and feuds. Admit it, Leo: Sometimes, people just can’t handle the fact that you were born for the spotlight. If you’re locked in a rivalry with someone who you think might be trying to steal your crown, just remember: heavy is the head. Sometimes, letting someone else step into the limelight for a moment is a good way to rest up before you once again claim your rightful spot.
Scorpio
Much like Taurus signs, Scorpios tend to hold a grudge. When someone wrongs them, that person is permanently in the doghouse. However, unlike Tauruses, Scorpios aren’t necessarily stubborn in their ways—sometimes, they just love to be a hater. As a Scorpio myself, my life feels incomplete without a rival of some kind to piss me off and motivate me while simultaneously making me feel a little bit in awe. This is the exact kind of dynamic that Glinda and Elphaba go through in Wicked: It’s that I-hate-you-but-also-I-want-to-be-you kind of jealousy that thrives within a Scorpio. If you’re a Scorpio and you hold a grudge, remember that envy can’t be your only motivator, even if it is effective.
Capricorn
Capricorns notoriously love to win, which is why they’re prime candidates for a Glinda and Elphaba-style rivalry. Organized and ambitious, Capricorns are by the book when it comes to getting what they want—so when someone else shakes up their professional life, dating world, or personal goals by achieving something in an unconventional way, they feel some loathing. If you’re a Capricorn, chances are you resented when the loud kid in class also managed perfect grades. As a Capricorn, if you find yourself with a rival who never does things quite the way you think they should be done, remember that sometimes flexibility can be a strength, too. If you want to defy gravity, you first have to have a big enough imagination to fly.
