When I have an upcoming vacation, it’s never as simple as just hopping on a flight. Behind every trip are a million little decisions I make on the front end to ensure it’s as fun and relaxing as possible. Vacation outfits are planned to a tee, itineraries are mapped out, and reservations are booked. But the most essential detail in my pre-trip planning that’s often overlooked by others is ensuring I have the perfect books to read on my vacation.

Some people take a more casual, grab whatever’s for sale at the airport bookstore approach to vacation entertainment, but they’re severely underestimating the impact a good vacation read can have on a trip. Personally, I love coordinating my books to reflect the setting or themes of my destination for a truly immersive reading experience. I mean, what’s better than reading about a gorgeous beach vacation, as you’re literally sitting on a gorgeous beach? If you’re already dreading the research required to find the perfect read for your specific vacation, you can take a deep breath—I’ve taken the liberty of rounding them up for you below. Here are the best vacation books to read, no matter what kind of trip you’re going on.

When Nan falls and breaks her hip, Alice plans another summer in that magical place, Barry’s Bay. But as soon as they settle in, their peace is disrupted by the roar of a familiar yellow boat, and the man driving it.
