"When it comes to nostalgic rom-coms, the real villain of the story is truly in the eye of the beholder. I have rewatched many of my favorite rom-coms only to realize that the person I thought was the villain was actually just a complex person. Often, the real villain of the story is in disguise (looking at you, Nate from The Devil Wears Prada). Regardless of whether they’re the obvious bad guy, one thing rom-com villains all have in common is that they’re not afraid to be themselves. Their strongest traits can help them succeed, but can also work against them—not unlike the traits of each zodiac sign.
Of course, a villain is typically making decisions that aren’t in the best interest of the main character. But then again, isn’t every villain the main character of their own story? Regina George is the queen bee of high school, and perhaps of all the rom-com villains out there. Like a true Aries, Regina knows what she wants and goes after it. She’s not afraid of competition and will do anything to win, even if that means releasing the Burn Book to the entire school and causing total chaos. While Regina thrives in her own messiness, underneath her Aries boldness is also a person in search of acceptance, just like the rest of us. Like an Aries, her power may be her undoing, but it also might be her greatest strength when used for good.
Taurus
Meredith Blake from The Parent Trap
Meredith is an ambitious business owner who runs her own PR company. It might not be obvious at first that Meredith is an Earth sign like Taurus, especially since she’s not great in a camping environment. However, she’s the definition of luxury and elegance when we first meet her, and those are definitely traits a Taurus tends to lean into. While she becomes the villain in the storyline of the movie, she’s actually quite practical and steady, never wavering and staying true to herself and her goals, just like any steady and staid Taurus.
Gemini
Queen Narissa from Enchanted
Perhaps the most classic fairytale villain on this list, Narissa is most like a Gemini because she has many sides to her personality (and she can literally shape-shift into a dragon). She has clear goals and objectives: Narissa wants to keep her crown at all costs. Much like a Gemini, she can make impulsive decisions to achieve those objectives, which occasionally work in her favor but more often backfire. But through all of her choices, Narissa maintains the Gemini traits that serve her the best. Her cleverness and wit will always be there to guide her.
Cancer
Nicholas Devereaux from The Princess Diaries 2
Okay, so technically Nicholas becomes Mia’s primary love interest, but he’s first introduced to us as the rom-com villain who challenges Mia’s throne in Genovia. While Nicolas initially comes off as arrogant, underneath that exterior is a person who eventually realizes he cares more about people than power. He supports Mia’s ascent to the throne, knowing she will be a great leader. Cancer signs act very similarly. Often, Cancers put up a protective shell to avoid getting hurt, but underneath that shell is a person who will do anything for someone they love.
Leo
Lana from The Princess Diaries
When Lana isn’t trying to make Mia’s life miserable in The Princess Diaries, she’s actually super creative and loves to be in the spotlight. Like every Leo, she has great hair. Played by Mandy Moore when she was in her “singer era” at the time, Lana is not afraid to stand in front of a crowd and belt out her feelings, even when things aren’t quite going her way. Lana is vivacious and confident, both traits that make a Leo someone who stands out in a crowd, even if she could probably spend some of her energy helping other people shine, too.
Virgo
Helen from Bridesmaids
Like any true Virgo sign, Helen is organized, efficient, and genuinely wants to be the perfect friend. Helen gets things done, even when it challenges the people around her or renders her “unlikeable.” Her methods of showing she cares for her friends can sometimes come off as calculated and methodical, but that is often the true love language of a Virgo. Helen eventually learns to step back and include other people in wedding-related decisions, but never waivers from showing up and supporting her friends.
Libra
Warner Huntington III from Legally Blonde
Yes, Warner broke Elle’s heart, and we can never really forgive him for the way he blindsided her. At the same time, he did lead her to a kick-ass career and the love of her life in Emmett, so clearly, he wasn’t totally evil. Like most Libras, Warner just wants things to be balanced, and he spends a lot of the movie just trying to make the best decision he possibly can: Going to law school, dating the girl he thinks is better for him, and pursuing academic prestige. As the most indecisive zodiac sign, most Libras can probably relate to some of Warner’s personal internal conflicts.
Scorpio
Lucy (AKA Tom-Tom) from 13 Going on 30
Much like a Regina George of the 80s, when 13 Going on 30 begins, Lucy knows how to rule a friend group. Like a Scorpio, Lucy (also known as Tom-Tom) is one of the more elusive villain-like characters, because we never get to see her sensitive side. When Tom-Tom and Jenna grow up, like a true Scorpio, she is motivated to be successful, but she is also prone to jealousy. While Jenna is busy reckoning with adulthood, Lucy uses her Scorpio-like strengths to crawl her way to the top of their magazine’s hierarchy, relying on her own intuition and unwavering determination.
Sagittarius
Abigail Fairfax from The Lost City
Played by the one and only Daniel Radcliffe, Abigail Fairfax is a multifaceted rom-com villain who loves to go on adventures, just like a Sagittarius might. While Abigail is reckless when he’s pursuing his goals, he’s also passionate about gaining wisdom. Like many adventure-driven rom-com villains and Sagittarius zodiac signs everywhere, he is truly on a quest for knowledge. The challenge for Sagittarius signs like Abigail is often trying to find the balance between their need for adventure in both the emotional and physical sense.
Capricorn
Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada
Miranda Priestly is one of the most iconic rom-com villains, and arguably the hero of her own story. Her unforgiving standards make her ruthlessly judgemental. There’s just something about Jennifer Coolidge as a villain that makes us love her, even when she’s playing an evil stepmother named Fiona. Like most Aquarians, Fiona is living her life on her own terms and isn’t stopping for anything or anyone. She has no use for trying to fit in. Fiona may be a little scattered when it comes to how she achieves her goals, but no one can say she’s not unique. Because of her flexible, go-with-the-flow Aquarian nature, Fiona is a villain who might be a good stepmother, if given the right motivation.
Pisces
Gen from To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before
Just like a dreamy and sensitive Pisces, Gen knows how to hold a grudge. However, Gen’s actions in To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before are largely driven by her emotional wants and needs, which most Pisceans can truly relate to. Her heart guides her, and while she doesn’t always do the right thing, she also intuitively understands her friends (and former friends like Lara Jean). Underneath her harsh exterior, like a Pisces, Gen is the type of rom-com villain who really just wants love and support.
