Dating hasn’t always been fun for me. I’m someone who usually swipes through the dating apps out of sheer boredom and then considers canceling nearly every date I agree to beforehand. Once I’m actually on a date, though, I tend to enjoy getting to know the person and the chemistry or witty banter that follows. While learning about my someone new’s childhood or career aspirations can be fun, choosing what to wear on a date night isn’t always so enjoyable.

As a plus-size woman, picking a date night outfit can be even more difficult when it comes to sizing and trends. Most of us in bigger bodies are all too familiar with the never ending “cold shoulder” tops and floral frocks that some stores try to pass as cute or flattering. Plus-size folks deserve to choose how they want to feel on dates—be it cute or sexy or chic—just like people who wear straight sizes.

Now that warmer weather is heading our way, I’ve been on a mission to refresh my wardrobe and collect a few new pieces that I can wear for a variety of occasions, dates included. Believe it or not, I was pleasantly surprised at the variety I was presented with and found some great options that I felt confident in. If you’re headed out for a romantic night soon, these are my no-fail date night looks.

For a coffee or lunch date

This is a simple, classic outfit that I’d wear to a more casual daytime date, like grabbing coffee. The key to this look being comfortable is that this skirt is actually a skort, which means you don’t have to worry about any accidental flashing. With a basic top and loafers or sneakers, this look is a go-to for me.

For a casual dinner

One thing about me? I’m extra AF. These sleeves are giving exactly the kind of vibe I want to give off on dates: eclectic and fun. I paired them with flare jeans to balance out the shape of the outfit, and I think this would be great for grabbing tacos and margs or heading to a cute brunch.

For grabbing drinks

Plus-size women shouldn’t shy away from showing some skin, and I love this look for dates where I want to feel a bit more on the sexy side. This lacy corset top fits like a dream and is surprisingly comfortable, and I love pairing it with loose denim for a relaxed, cool look. If it’s on the chilly side, you could also throw a leather jacket over your shoulders to complete this sexy ensemble for the next time you’re going to grab drinks.

For a fancy dinner

I’m not typically one for wearing cocktail dresses or anything truly fancy on a date, but this dress spoke to me. It’s such a standout piece, and I love how much I can tailor it to the date I’m heading to with my shoes and accessories. (PrettyLittleThing has great plus-size options, and they’ve even put together a date night edit for some inspo.)
