Toward the end of winter, the desire for spring turns into less of a want and more of a need. After months of covering up outfits with a puffer coat, a general feeling of being *over it* seeps in and can only be cured by that first 60-degree day.

While fall gets all of the credit for being the best season to dress for, I’m of the belief that spring deserves far more recognition. Swapping out sweaters for tees and boots for sandals comes as a reminder that the best months of the year are upon us—and luckily, are only just getting started.

As our calendars turned to March, our minds changed channels to have spring on the brain, and our 2025 spring capsule wardrobe is here to usher in the new season in style

What Is a Capsule Wardrobe?

The simple definition is that it’s a curated wardrobe made up of versatile pieces that you love to wear. Your capsule wardrobe should be a testament to your personal style.

A capsule wardrobe consists of a set of tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear, shoes, and accessories that can be easily mixed and matched together to be dressed up, down, and anywhere in between. It consists of high-quality pieces that stand the test of time and can be worn for years to come.

How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe

The first step to building a capsule wardrobe is taking a good, hard look at what you already own, then figuring out what needs to go—and what holes your closet has that need filling.

Sort each item into one of four piles:

Seasonal: There’s no need to keep a chunky sweater next to your summer tank tops. Move all of your seasonal pieces into a storage location that will be easy for you to swap out once the time is right.

I love it and would wear it tomorrow: These pieces fit your body and your lifestyle, and you’re confident wearing them. Put these back first.

Maybe: These pieces might not fit perfectly, or maybe just haven’t been worn in a while. (If you haven’t reached for a piece more than once, it belongs in this pile too). Put all of these items in a box and store them in a place that’s easily accessible. If you find yourself reaching for an item, put it back in your closet after; if you haven’t reached for it by the end of the season, keep it in the box to take to donate. This is noncommittal (for now) and allows you to change your mind later.

Hard no: Whether it’s because it doesn’t fit or you just decided you don’t like it, pack these pieces up to donate them.

One of the biggest misconceptions about capsule wardrobes is that they don’t apply to people with trendy or maximalist-leaning style. A good capsule collection doesn’t need to be a pattern-free collection of neutral pieces, and my goal was to showcase that with this spring’s edition.

You don’t have to add every trend of the season to your closet in order to feel cool and well-dressed; all it takes is a few, strategically chosen pieces that can work a little styling magic. With the help of pops of butter yellow, cerulean, and denim tops, this year’s spring capsule wardrobe incorporates some of the most anticipated elements of the season, but takes a timeless, wearable approach to them.

TL;DR: It includes pieces that will ensure your outfits feel far from boring, but all of those pieces will still be in style next year, and the year after that.

Understanding Your Personal Style

Understanding your personal style is the key to building a capsule wardrobe that really resonates with you. Start by taking a closer look at your current wardrobe. Which pieces do you reach for time and time again? Identify the pieces that you feel the most you in.

Consider your lifestyle and style preferences, too. Ask yourself questions like: What are my favorite colors? Do I lean toward classic styles, or do I prefer trendier pieces? Do I tend to reach for bottoms that prioritize comfort? Start to find the patterns in your preferences before you add anything new to your closet.

Creating a Color Palette

You want your capsule wardrobe to be filled with pieces you actually want to wear, which means they should fall into a color palette you want to reach for on repeat. Start by thinking about your most-worn pieces: Are they bright and statement-making, or neutral and classic? Having a few neutrals in your capsule wardrobe for versatility’s sake isn’t a bad idea, but your capsule definitely doesn’t need to be—and honestly, shouldn’t be—only neutrals. Prioritize selecting pieces in colors you know you’ll reach for—even better, in colors that spark joy for you—and in shades that will pair well with other pieces in your closet.

The Essentials of a Spring Capsule Wardrobe

Spring dressing is unique in that almost all of your year-round closet essentials are in play. Jeans, shorts, sweaters, tees—within the span of a week, they all have the opportunity to be rotated into outfits. I created this year’s spring capsule wardrobe with the intent to incorporate wearable seasonal trends—like yellow and cerulean—that can be easily worn with existing pieces in your closet.

Essential Tops and Outerwear

These tops and jackets can be mixed and matched with any of your closet staples.

  • A white tee: A T-shirt can be worn alone or layered under your sweaters, button-ups and jackets.
  • A button-up: You can opt for a classic white button-up, or one in a bright color or loud pattern that will make a statement this spring.
  • A cardigan: While spring might not be known as sweater season, a cardigan is an essential for days with breezy mornings and chilly nights.
  • A denim button-up: The perfect addition to a capsule wardrobe, a denim button-up can be worn as a top or a light jacket on days when the weather can’t make up its mind.
  • A lightweight jacket: For those April days when it’s not too hot and not too cold, a versatile, lightweight jacket can be added to all of your outfits.

Essential Bottoms

For everything from office days to patio happy hours, these bottoms can be worn on repeat.

  • A pair of jeans: This year, barrel-style jeans provide a modern update to your go-to denim.
  • Linen pants: Linen pants can be worn on repeat throughout the spring and summer months, and are versatile enough to be paired with just about any top in your closet.
  • Denim shorts: Long-length denim shorts can be dressed up or down for whatever your spring calendar might bring.

Essential Accessories

The perfect finishing touch to a spring outfit? A statement-making accessory.

  • A suede bag: Suede materials will continue to dominate accessories throughout 2025, and a suede tote can be both your work bag and your weekend carry-all.
  • A silver necklace: A silver necklace will compliment spring 2025’s hottest color trends (and happens to be one of the top jewelry trends of year).
  • Cuff bracelet: Don’t underestimate the power a cuff bracelet (or two, or three…) has to add some interest to an outfit. Bonus points if you use them as an opportunity to mix metals.

How to style your spring capsule wardrobe

To lunch with the girls

Cropped Trench (Alternate Option) (Plus) | Cuff Bracelet | Kitten Heels | Jeans (Curve) | Oval Sunglasses | White Tee (Plus) | Shoulder Bag

A casual-cool spring outfit has to be ready for anything: rain, snow, sun, the temperature varying 20 degrees throughout the day. To brace yourself for whatever the finicky weather might bring, spring’s cropped trench coat trend is ready to step into your everyday lineup. The cropped length brings a bit more edge to an outfit than a full length would, and when paired with trendy barrel jeans, a tee, and kitten heels, pulls everything together for a polished spring uniform.

To the office

Oval Sunglasses | Cuff Bracelet | Kitten Heels | Shirt Dress (Plus) | Earrings | Tote

If you have a commute that requires walking or public transportation, the last thing you want to sneak up on you is an unexpectedly warm spring day that leaves you sweaty before you even enter your office’s door. The answer? Having a few work-ready dresses in your closet that you look forward to throwing on on busy mornings. This shirt dress can serve as the perfect base for any shoes and accessories you have in your closet, so it can be worn on repeat without ever feeling stale or boring.

For a slow Saturday

Cardigan (Alternate Option) (Plus) | Necklace | Sneakers | Jeans (Curve) | White Tee (Plus) | Oval Sunglasses

In my humble opinion, the entire point of spring is to indulge in the bright, cheery colors that come with the once-a-year excitement of the weather warming up. Last year’s airy, pastel blues are being exchanged for deeper shades of cerulean this year (queue Miranda Priestly’s monologue), and this lightweight cardigan is the perfect way to work it into your existing wardrobe for the months ahead.

For a day walking around the city

Denim Jacket (Plus) | Tote | Ballet Flats | White Tee (Plus) | Necklace | Trouser Shorts (Plus)

The best outfit to lean on when you don’t know what to wear? Denim on denim. Make the inherently chic combo spring-ready by pairing tailored denim shorts with a denim lady jacket. The combination can be dressed up with ballet flats or heels, or made casual with the help of sneakers or your favorite sandals. Incorporate this year’s Mocha Mousse trend in the form of a classic, oversized suede bag.

To a bridal or baby shower

Button Tank (Plus) | Oval Sunglasses | Cuff Bracelet | Ballet Flats | Linen Pants (Plus) | Cropped Trench (Alternate Option) (Plus) | Shoulder Bag

Is there a color that sparks more joy than butter yellow? Lucky for us, the dreamy shade is gearing up to be one of the top colors of spring, and while there are an endless amount of pieces you can add to your cart in the cheery pastel, an easy tank is a versatile choice that can be worn through the first days of fall. Dress it up for any spring showers you have coming up with linen pants, ballet flats, and a cropped trench coat.
