One of the major rules of small space living is to look for and invest in furniture pieces that can serve multiple purposes. Small spaces present a number of challenges, from live/sleep studio rooms to dining areas that might have to double as home offices. Double-duty furniture can help solve many of these problems. Here are some of our favorite pieces for your own small space:

Dip-dyed stools, Serena & Lily
Source: SF Gate
As seen above, these Serena & Lily dip-dyed stools are great as seating, side tables or even ottomans. The smaller version, in particular, is perfect for stashing in nooks and crannies or as a vanity or desk stool. For a more budget-friendly option, try a DIY!
RASKOG Cart, IKEA

Carts can serve a variety of functions in a small home, from the kitchen to the bathroom and every room in between. The IKEA RASKOG cart is a cult favorite, and has even made multiple appearances here on The Everygirl — we love it for extra workspace and kitchen storage.
Peekaboo Acrylic Console Table, CB2
Source: Domino
The Peekaboo acrylic collection from CB2 is great for small spaces, since lucite furniture literally lets the light through to help a room seem bigger. Use the console table as a desk now, and as an entryway piece if you move on to larger digs.
MALM Dresser, IKEA
Source: The Everygirl
The MALM collection from IKEA is a small-space classic, especially the versatile MALM dresser. While it can, of course, store all your clothes, it also works surprisingly well in a living room or as a media stand — just add a few brass or lucite pulls to liven up the design.
REVISION 6/28/16: IKEA has recalled thousands of dressers due to tipping accidents with children. Please always anchor furniture used in a child’s room. To read more about this recall, click here.
Moroccan Pouf, Lulu & Georgia

This style of pouf is available from a variety of shops. They work in practically every room of the house, serving as extra seating, ottomans, or even a coffee-table substitute with a tray on top.
Industrial Storage Coffee Table, West Elm

If you have enough space for a proper coffee table, the West Elm Industrial Storage Coffee Table is a wonderful option thanks to its hidden storage capabilities. It’s perfect for stashing DVD collections, holiday decorations and more.
Gateleg Dining Table, Various Designers and Retailers

Drop-leaf and gateleg dining tables are a small kitchen or dining area’s best friend, thanks to their ability to expand for extra seating and collapse to save space when not in use. They’re available at a variety of price points, from IKEA to Crate and Barrel.
Novo Acrylic Folding Table, CB2

From a side table, to a makeshift workspace, to an extra dining space for guests, this folding tray table is a small space workhorse — and stylish to boot!
KALLAX Shelves, IKEA
Source: The Everygirl
A true small-space classic, these shelves are an Everygirl favorite. The KALLAX (formerly known as EXPEDIT) has popped up in multiple home tours, and we’ve even done a feature on three ways to style the 4×4 version. The large version makes an excellent studio room divider, too.
