Week of Outfits: Nini Ikhena, Designer and Software Engineer

"

Over the years, I find that the more I’ve learned to embrace myself, the more harmonious my closet has gotten. The truth is, I’m drawn to a wide variety of genres of style and color palettes — I used to put a lot of pressure on myself to have a more cohesive closet with one or two style genres, but now, I approach style as a way of self-discovery. The more I follow what I am naturally drawn to, the better I understand who I am, and how my journey and self-expression is evolving.

I genuinely believe this is how style should be. It should be as fluid as we are, and it should be authentic. Overall, I’d describe my style as whatever feels like my mood at the time. It changes based on the general theme of my life at each moment, which in many cases also influences the music I’m listening to, the films I am watching, and the art pieces I’m purchasing. At the moment, I’ve been drawn to more oversized, afrocentric and vibrant pieces that are reminiscent of home (Nigeria). 🙂

I currently work from home, which has made my daily style a lot more flexible. My favorite staple item is a good pair of statement earrings! I love how well they transform and complete almost every outfit, if worn with the right color palette. Whenever I’m not really in the mood to dress up, a simple white tee, pair of denim jeans and right earrings do the trick!

Monday

I love this outfit and its muted color palette. I love wearing it to brunch or dinner with friends, as it’s breezy with enough room to eat comfortably, which is always a plus.

Tuesday

I love everything about this dress, from its cut to the polka dots. Again I opted for a comfortable dress, with a basket purse large enough to hold all my necessities for the day. I finished the look with these white pom pom earrings that I’ve been obsessed with recently.

Wednesday

There’s nothing better than a power jumpsuit to get you through the midpoint of the week. I love the butterfly sleeves, the print, and how versatile it is. I usually wear this outfit when I know I have a long day ahead, as it can be styled casually during the day, with a switch to heels for a night out.

Thursday

As you may have noticed, I’m a sucker for bold prints and power cuts. I fell in love with this two-piece outfit at a fair and had to get it. Just like the jumpsuit, it’s quite versatile and fitting for a range of events. On this day, I styled with the white pom pom earrings (they simply light up my day) and a pair of sneakers to complete the look.

Friday

And finally, it’s Friday! I love how storytelling this outfit is — the skirt has a time-traveling essence to it with a hint of Spanish influence. I paired it with a cropped top to explore the streets of the Frenchman Quarter on a hot summer day.
