Most people’s holiday decor tends to remain pretty static from year to year. As the holiday season approaches, you likely pull out the same garlands, wreaths, and twinkly lights you decorate with every year. But every now and then, a trend comes along that tempts you to switch up the traditional trimmings, and this year is undeniably the season of the bow.

“Bows are so festive and make so much sense for holiday decor that it’s surprising they haven’t been trending before now,” said Tom Magill, the senior home stylist for Anthropologie. “Take a typical holiday wreath, for example: a bow is the natural finishing touch. We also think of big stacks of gifts in bright wrapping paper tied in ribbons and bows when we think of the holidays.”

While bows may be a traditional part of holiday decor, what makes them cross over into trending territory is the unexpected ways people are using them. Last year, we saw an influx of delicate, hand-tied bows adorning candlesticks, champagne coupes, and the boughs of Christmas trees. But in 2024, the bow trend is reaching new heights. You can now find everything from napkin rings to stocking holders to tree toppers in the shape of a bow. So whether you prefer to tie them yourself or incorporate the shape through other accessories, bows are undoubtedly this year’s biggest holiday decor trend.

How to Decorate with Bows for the Holidays

Part of the beauty of the bow trend lies in its versatility. Bows really can work just about anywhere. As you decorate for the holidays this year, look around your home for places that could use an extra festive touch. “Tie a big bow onto a floor lamp or around a mirror,” Magill suggested. “One of my favorite pieces in my own home is Anthro’s Grecian Bust Pot, and she always gets a cheery red bow to wear during the holidays.”

Magill also advised playing with different ribbon textures and fabrics for maximum effect. Shiny satin, velvet, or frayed chiffon all make beautiful bows. As for tying the perfect bow, practice is key. For a polished look, ensure your two loops are even and trim the ends into “V” shapes. Or if you’re going for an effortless look, let the ends trail long and floppy. Either way, don’t overthink it, Magill said. “The best bows look like they were tied by hand and are a little imperfect.”
