While there are few things I love more than jetting off on a lengthy vacation, sometimes a quick road trip is all that’s in the cards. Whether you’re dealing with a demanding work schedule or you’re on a tight budget, road trips are a stellar (yet underrated) travel option. There’s something uniquely fun about packing up your car and setting off with some friends or a partner—and don’t even get me started on road trip snacks. Plus, air travel is undeniably stressful (and seems to be getting increasingly expensive), so any excuse to skip the TSA line and opt for the comfort of your own space is a win in my book.
If you’re thinking of planning a road trip this summer, allow me to provide some inspiration. Regardless of whether you have a whole week to work with or just a long weekend, these road trip ideas deserve a spot on your bucket list.
1. Drive down the California coastline

San Francisco, California, to Santa Barbara, California
It’s no secret that California is home to plenty of scenic drives and visit-worthy destinations. One of the best ways to experience this state’s gorgeous terrain? Drive south from San Francisco until you hit the sleepy, seaside town of Santa Barbara. You can choose to drive along the 101 freeway or the Pacific Coast Highway—the PCH is undoubtedly more scenic but will take longer. If you opt for the PCH route, you can expect stunning cliffside views of Big Sur and McWay Falls, whereas the 101 will take you through inland areas like Paso Robles (which is known for its wine scene).
Once you arrive in Santa Barbara, kick back at the beach, hop from one wine tasting room to another, or indulge in a little shopping. This small city has so much to offer, from a lively food scene to pretty hiking trails. Two bucket list-worthy accommodations in the area include the Kimpton Canary Hotel and Hideaway. Both spots would make for a charming setting for a mother-daughter trip or a couples getaway.
2. Channel Nancy Meyers on the East Coast

Newport, Rhode Island, to Portland, Maine
Calling all Nancy Meyers fans! If you want to tap into all things coastal grandmother, a road trip around New England is the perfect fix. Although you’ll cover a lot of ground, the drive from Newport to Portland, Maine, is just under three hours, making it doable for a quick weekend escape. Starting in Newport, indulge in all things New England luxury—think Gilded Age mansions, stunning sailboats, and waterfront happy hours. Be sure to make a dinner reservation at Pasta Beach for delicious Italian cuisine, and stop by Castle Hill Inn for lawn cocktails and boat views.
Along your way to Portland, some stops worth making include Boston, Massachusetts, and Kennebunkport, Maine. These two cities offer unique experiences (big city vibes versus small town charm), but both are great for a quick stop to break up your drive or for a one- to two-night stay. Once you reach Portland, immerse yourself in the rich maritime history and fishing scene. Portland is also an artsy and food-rich destination, so you’ll want to come hungry and ready to do plenty of walking around the cobblestone streets.
3. Experience southern charm at its best

Charleston, South Carolina, to Sea Island, Georgia
If you’re looking for relaxing and slow-paced road trip ideas, this three-hour excursion is for you. The close proximity between Charleston and Sea Island means this trip is easily doable in just a few days, ideal for those on a time crunch. Along the drive, expect to see a mix of marsh views and Georgia’s infamous live oak trees. One of the most well-known detours along this route? The city of Savannah! Stop for lunch and some shopping, or stay the night at one of the town’s historic hotels. The Hamilton-Turner Inn and Kehoe House are two classic lodging options.
Once you’ve made your way to Sea Island, enjoy gorgeous beaches, a plethora of golf courses, upscale dining, and world-class spa amenities. While on the island, you’ll have plenty of options to get your fix of tasty local seafood—Southern Tide is a fan favorite. You’ll also want to check out the shopping scene at Two Friends boutique, where you can sip champagne while you browse home decor, beauty, and fashion finds.
4. Take a drive to the desert

San Diego, California, to Scottsdale, Arizona
Scottsdale is chock-full of activities for every traveler and makes a fantastic girls’ trip destination. Easy to get to from various spots, it’s one of the best road trip ideas if you’re coming from California. Driving just a few hours can score you a completely different landscape, climate, and overall scene. Getting there will involve a hefty dose of desert landscapes and open skies, providing the perfect opportunity to blast your favorite playlist or indulge in an audiobook. While it takes you through somewhat remote areas, the drive itself is sure to be peaceful.
Upon arrival, check in at a wellness-focused hotel, like the Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa (great for couples) or The Scott (ideal for friend groups). Slap on some SPF and try outdoor activities like hiking, tennis, or pickleball, or opt for some retail therapy instead. To round out your itinerary, make a custom cowboy hat at Rancher Hat Bar, indulge in an outdoor brunch at El Chorro Lodge, or play a round of golf at Camelback Golf Club (which is beginner-friendly!).
5. Mix city vibes with lake life

Chicago, Illinois, to Saugatuck, Michigan
Clocking in at just under three hours of driving time each way, this Midwest road trip is easy to accomplish in a weekend. You’ll start off in the urban setting of Chicago but will soon trade skyline views for a greener, more pastoral feel. Saugatuck itself is surrounded by dunes, lush trees, small town architecture, and, of course, Lake Michigan. While you don’t need to make stops during such a short trip, there are plenty of quaint towns along the way that are full of cute coffee shops, art galleries, and boutiques. Some options include New Buffalo and South Haven, Michigan.
In Saugatuck, immerse yourself in the lake life by booking a stay with waterfront views and spending plenty of time out on the water. If you want to rent a boat, Retro Boat Rentals is a local favorite that offers a variety of options for various group sizes and interests. Additional outdoor activities include visiting the Saugatuck Dunes State Park or Oval Beach, which is the ideal spot to post up with a good book and a beach chair. After a day in the sun, head to one of the area’s many restaurants and breweries to refuel.
6. Blend country music with mountain views

Nashville, Tennessee, to Asheville, North Carolina
A trip to Nashville is noteworthy in and of itself, but venturing outside of Tennessee to Asheville will provide you with a well-rounded getaway. The Southern Appalachian drive will be filled with rolling hills and, ultimately, mountain views waiting at the end.
Kick your trip off by visiting the Country Music Hall of Fame, then head outside of the city for a more nature-inspired feel. Two stops to consider making along the way: Cummins Falls State Park, where you can hike to a stunning waterfall, and Fall Creek Falls State Park, which requires a slight detour but is known as one of the state’s most popular attractions.
At the end of your drive, you’ll arrive in the artsy and outdoorsy town of Asheville, perfectly perched alongside the Blue Ridge Mountains. While there’s no shortage of hiking trails and active adventures, Asheville also boasts a lively brewery and farm-to-table dining scene. One must-visit spot is the Biltmore Estate, which is packed with history and charm. Wander around the estate’s precisely manicured gardens, or stop by the property’s winery after exploring the mansion’s interior. Either way, this stop will balance out your otherwise low-key trip with something that feels a bit more luxe.
7. Trade the beach for wine country

Los Angeles, California, to Sonoma, California
Get out of the hustle and bustle of LA and unwind in the heart of wine country. The drive from Southern California to the northern wine regions can be made as eventful or direct as you’d like. The I-5 freeway is the fastest route, the 101 is a slightly more scenic option, and the PCH will offer the most picturesque views. Stops along the way include San Luis Obispo, Monterey and Carmel, and San Francisco. These could work as day trips or one- to two-night stays if you want to extend your trip a bit.
Compared to Napa, Sonoma has a slightly more “local” and small-town feel. However, Napa is just a stone’s throw away, so visiting both wine destinations is totally doable if you have more time to explore.
Some highly sought-after places to stay in the Sonoma area include Farmhouse Inn and The Madrona. Both properties are perfect for a special occasion or celebratory trip, like a milestone birthday or an anniversary. Don’t leave Sonoma County without stopping by Falling for Dainty, a small shop that offers permanent jewelry, charm bracelets, and other cute finds.
8. Road trip with the girls to Vegas

Salt Lake City, Utah, to Las Vegas, Nevada
If you’re looking for lively road trip ideas for your next vacation with the girls, there’s no place better than Las Vegas. While it might seem like the upbeat scene isn’t for everyone, try to keep an open mind when it comes to Sin City. You don’t have to spend your time gambling or downing drinks by the pool—Vegas also boasts an abundance of shows, concerts, and museums to fill your time.
If you start your trek in Salt Lake City, you’ll drive through the Virgin River Gorge, a breathtaking canyon that’s full of colorful rock formations. After that, you’ll mainly experience desert views until the iconic strip hits the horizon—and that’s when the real fun begins.
As far as accommodations go, Paris Las Vegas and the Flamingo are two go-to options for a girls’ trip. While the dining choices are aplenty, The Bedford by Martha Stewart is a must-eat-at spot if you ask me. The restaurant boasts a welcoming and upscale atmosphere that will transport you to Martha’s country home (when in reality, you’re on the Las Vegas Strip). Oh, and if you’re a fan of Vanderpump Rules, you’ll love grabbing a drink at the Vanderpump Cocktail Garden. Feeling adventurous? Scope out the best views on the High Roller or book a Grand Canyon Helicopter Tour. The beauty about Vegas is that there is quite literally something for everyone to enjoy.
