I’m a shopper through and through—it’s something I genuinely enjoy doing and always have. One of my favorite weekend activities is strolling through the mall or cozying up at home with a glass of wine in one hand and my laptop in the other. But, while I love to shop, I find myself left with lots of individual pieces in my closet and sometimes don’t quite know how to outfit them in a fresh and new way. I also seem to have a full closet that I stand in front of in the morning and wonder why I have nothing to wear (anyone else?).
Nowadays, there are plenty of online styling services that can help you with that, so I turned to trusty Amazon. That’s right—there’s an Amazon personal shopper service. Personal Shopper by Prime Wardrobe is similar to Stitch Fix and Trunk Club in that a stylist learns about your body shape and preferences and puts together outfits they think you’ll love. The major difference? The cost is much lower at $5. (Yes, less than your daily Starbucks order). I tested it, and this is how it went:
The Style Survey
Think of your style survey as your first impression without being able to talk to someone. The survey has you choose between different style archetypes you like best, such as edgy, boho, classic, and retro (there are 10 categories in all). You also enter in your body shape, where you live, and what you’re looking for. To fully get your goals across, there’s also an open text field so that you can directly communicate your requests with your stylist.
My Stylist’s Picks
From there, I received Amazon fashion picks from a personal stylist. I let my stylist know that I was looking for casual work-from-home pieces with a few going out tops for weekend get-togethers. She wrote me a cute little note telling me about her favorite pieces in the 16-item collection and explained how to wear them.
What I loved about her picks was that they were arranged in groups of three or four items to make complete outfits so you can see exactly how to wear each piece. I noted that I like to stay on top of trends, and my collection consisted of feminine puff sleeve tops, high-waist jeans (just as I requested), and some easy summer dresses in different silhouettes.
If you struggle to style new pieces, this is the perfect solution, as it eliminates guessing how to incorporate it into your wardrobe and allows you to copy or take inspiration from the stylist’s suggestions.
The Next Steps
Of those 16 pieces, you’re able to choose eight items from the collection to be sent to you to try on at home. You’re not charged for anything unless you decide to keep it, but they do require you to use a credit card at checkout. My outfits arrived a few days later, and I loved being able to try everything on in the comfort of my own home. I ended up keeping a pair of high-waisted Levi’s, a one-shoulder top by one of Amazon’s in-house brands, and a pair of sandals by Splendid. I packaged up the pieces I was sending back in the return envelope they provided and dropped off the package at my local UPS store.
Out of all the online styling services I’ve tried, Amazon’s is my favorite by far. I love the low out-of-pocket cost, having access to the name brands Amazon carries, and having lots of pieces to choose from. I also really like being able to select what to ship and what not to ship versus just having pieces show up at my front door that I don’t really like.
Even if you decide not to buy anything, it’s always refreshing to see what someone else picks out for you and how they put outfits together. It definitely inspired me to try new things in my styling, like pairing my white jeans with a white top for a monochromatic ensemble this summer. If you’re looking for some style inspiration or just need a wardrobe refresh, I couldn’t recommend Personal Shopper by Amazon Wardrobe more.
