18 Documentaries So Good You Won’t Sleep Until You Finish Them

written by BRETT NICOLE HAYDEN & EMMA GINSBERG

I love creative, unique, and even supernatural shows as much as the next gal, but I’ve come to find out that there are some real-life events that are just as (if not more) fascinating than anything even the best writers can come up with. That’s why, every now and then, I love to binge the latest documentary or docuseries on my favorite streaming platforms. I’m drawn to the stories that are so outrageous that I can’t believe they’re real, as well as the success stories of my favorite artists. When you want a sprinkle of reality that’s just as fascinating as fiction, these are the best documentaries that you’ll be so into you’ll have to finish in one sitting.

1. Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey

Format: Docuseries
Number of episodes: 4
Where to stream: Netflix

I tend to believe there’s not much that’s more fascinating than a cult. Add that element to a corrupt leader and polygamist practices and you get a particular sector of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The title, Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey, is the outline for how women should behave according to their leader, Warren Jeffs. The documentary takes a deep dive into the problematic traditions of this particular cult and the actions of their leader, including extreme exercises of power, abusive actions, and multiple “marriages” to underage wives. This is one you won’t want to miss but will want to forget.

2. Victoria’s Secret: Angels and Demons

Format: Docuseries
Number of episodes: 3
Where to stream: Hulu

America’s most popular lingerie brand has quite a troubling past, and Victoria’s Secret: Angels and Demons explains the evil that can be hidden behind a beautiful facade. This Hulu documentary digs into the brand’s problematic exploitation of women and the unattainable expectations it placed on women’s bodies.

The documentary also examines Les Wexner, CEO of the infamous brand, and his connection to Jeffery Epstein. Epstein is known for creating an elaborate sex trafficking network, and it has since come out that Wexner may have had a much closer working relationship with Epstein than anyone knew. If you’ve followed the Epstein case, or simply are interested in hearing more about the history of the VS brand, this is the documentary for you.

This three-part docuseries, which can be watched on Hulu, explores the scandalous hacking of Ashley Madison, a high-profile cheating website. The series begins by explaining the origins of Ashley Madison during the rise of online dating, the outrageous marketing tactics that the brand used, and the company’s founder. By exploring the consequences of the cheating site itself and the data breach, this docuseries captures the human cost of dirty secrets.

4. The Janes

The Janes is an incredibly timely documentary highlighting a group of courageous women. In pre-Roe v. Wade America where abortions were illegal, this unlikely group of women created an underground network to provide women with safe and affordable abortion services. Britney Spears lovers rejoiced when the singer was finally released from her conservatorship. Wallet, viewers get a peek into the events that led up to the conservatorship and Britney’s battle for freedom in the Netflix documentary, Britney VS Spears. 6. White Hot: The Rise and Fall of Abercrombie & Fitch

Abercrombie & Fitch hasn’t always been the trendy, inclusive, affordable brand we all know and love today. In fact, the brand has had to work to mend its reputation after years of racism, sizeism, and, let’s face it, overpowering scents. The brand reigned superior in the late ’90s and early 2000s, but at what cost? Exclusionary tactics, elitism, and exploitation were the name of the A&F game. Watch White Hot for firsthand accounts of the exploitation and abuse from former employees, then decide for yourself if the brand holds itself to higher standards going forward.

The programs and accompanying retreats gained so much popularity throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico that there have been more than 18,000 recorded members.
