When I put my first trench coat on at age 18 I felt a little silly. It was a hand-me-down, fully equipped with shoulder pads and a removable lining (in plaid, of course), given to me by my aunt before I moved to New York City for college. I didn’t touch it my first winter in the city, opting for a more age-appropriate puffer jacket or teddy coat.

A year and a half later, I reached for it one evening on a whim before meeting up with some friends and I felt like my life was changed. I remember I was wearing black flared jeans, a turtleneck, and heeled booties. I stared at my 20-year-old self in the mirror and thought, “Is this what it feels like to be a woman?”

Since then, I have made it a personal goal to let every other person I know that if they don’t have a trench coat in their closet, they need to obtain one ASAP. I’m not exaggerating when I say that a trench coat truly goes with every outfit come fall. Slouchy jeans and a tee? Trench coat. Running errands in leggings and a hoodie? Trench coat. (There’s something so special about the hood of your sweatshirt peeking over your trench—so chic!)

How to style a trench coat

One of my favorite ways to style my trench coat is with a big ol’ blanket scarf. Whether you opt for one in a coordinating neutral or in a bright color to provide a pop, a scarf will help your coat transition your trench into the cooler months. (Bonus style points if you nix the scarf and tie a sweater around your shoulders instead.)

When you think of a trench coat, a classic, nylon one in a shade of khaki probably comes to mind first, but in 2023, that’s far from the only trench option you have. From full leather versions to denim ones that’ll help you master a fall Canadian tuxedo moment, your trench coat can be as classic or as statement-making as your heart desires. If you’re looking for added warmth, a wool coat with trench details is on the table, too.
