One of my favorite things in the world is staying in a nice hotel. The elegant lobbies, the big sumptuous beds, throwing open the curtains to take in the natural light — nothing makes me feel more luxurious.

In my lifelong quest to make my home feel luxurious and elegant instead of just the place where I dump all my belongings, I’ve decided to take a few ideas from 5-star hotels. Here’s how to take your apartment from meh to mahhhhvelous, darling.

Upgrade Your Pillows

What is it about hotel pillows that make them feel so luxurious? Well for starters, they’re not old and flattened like the ones you probably have on your bed at home. When pillow shopping, buy one with a firmness that is compatible with how you must commonly sleep. I’m a side-sleeper, so I tend to go a little more firm.

Down and feather pillows are cozier than the standard cotton stuffing, but if you’re allergic or sensitive to feathers there are other options available.

Swap Your Sheets

You won’t believe how much a good set of sheets can improve your sleep. Contrary to popular belief, the quality of a sheet set isn’t just the thread count. You’ll likely want something between 200 or 300 on the low end and 800 on the high end so that the sheets are soft enough, but also consider the material with which they’re made. Satin sheets will feel smooth and cool, while Egyptian cotton will feel soft and comfortable.

Create a Coffee/Tea Bar

Coffee in bed on a Saturday morning? Yes, please! Pull your coffee maker out from the corner of your kitchen and create an inviting coffee, tea, and cocoa bar to make your mornings a bit more glamorous. Incorporate some of your favorite mugs to add height to your display.

Turn Your Bathroom into a Spa-Like Dream

Hotel bathrooms are uncluttered, sleek, and well-lit. Instead of spreading everything out across your countertop, stow your products out of sight. Add a luxe tray table to display your bath salts, a pretty lotion, or q-tips.

Speaking of toiletries, let’s upgrade a little. The small bottles most hotels offer aren’t great for the environment, but there are ways to feel like you’re getting a 5-star experience at home. Pick up a bougie bottle of lotion from your favorite boutique shop to make moisturizing feel a little more high-end.

Invest in Good, Fluffy Towels

No luxury hotel would expect you to wrap yourself in a thin, hole-filled towel, so why are you settling for that in your apartment? Combed cotton or Turkish cotton towels are thick and absorbent, so you’ll step out of the shower and be greeted by a linen version of a warm hug. Stock up on at least four new towels so you’ll have backups while the others are in the wash.
