We’ve all been there: a new year comes, and all you want is to reinvent yourself, so you toss $50 here, $25 there, $100 there (jeans are expensive!), and next thing you know “new you” has turned into quite an expensive venture. This year, instead of waiting until those items are right at the forefront, we’ve done a little trendspotting for the top items you’ll want in your possession in 2024—and they’re a perfect addition to your Christmas wishlist. Guaranteed, these gift ideas are the items that everyone will be talking about next year, and you’ll already have them.
1. Vibrant blue accessories
One color dominated Spring 2024 runways: an intense, rich blue that almost resembles a jewel tone or royal blue. After the black and beige that dominated the past few months of 2023, we’re ready for a pop of color. Wear it as an accessory for a surprising accent, or make a statement with a signature item such as a blazer or top (pair with linen trousers or light wash denim).
2. A high-quality flat iron
While ’90s bombshell blowout was all the rage in 2023, 2024 will be the year of healthy, shiny, flat hair–which means you’re due for a high-quality iron that won’t fry your hair and take you straight back to seventh grade. Since healthy and natural hair will be the dominant hair trend of next year, consumers are not just expecting good style, but quality hair care too. The newest flat irons on the market won’t burn or damage hair, but leave it shiny, healthy, and fizz-free. Look for ceramic plates to reduce damage, options that use heated air over heated plates, or an intentional temperature range so you can adjust to your own hair.
3. Sleep supplements
According to MindBody’s 2024 Predictions Report, the importance of sleep hygiene will be at the forefront of the wellness industry, and getting more, high-quality Zzz’s will be at the top of everyone’s priority come January 1. When you think of sleep supplements, you likely think of old-school melatonin or drowsy medications, but the new wave of functional supplements uses better technology (think: delayed release and immediate melatonin for better, longer, deeper sleep) and herbs and adaptogens meant to relax the nervous system, ease sleep, and relax the body before bed, that you can take on a daily basis.
4. Decorative storage boxes
When it comes to our homes, 2024 is all about living more minimally and optimizing organization so our homes can help us feel calm, while adding in our own personal style with touches that make us feel happy. A micro trend we’ll see in 2024 is decorative storage boxes. Think: everything from chic structures to hide cords in your home office, to pretty clear dishes and containers to organize jewelry on your vanity. Not only does this decor trend add style to your home, but will decrease clutter–a win-win!
5. Workout equipment at your desk
If you haven’t hopped on the phenomenon that was under-the-desk treadmills, you’re about to. Ever since the pandemic, people are rethinking how they can move more and sit less–that goes for your 9-5 as well. Equipment that allows you to get in some extra movement while you’re on calls or answering emails will continue to boom well into 2024. And it makes sense: Why would you sit through a meeting at your desk when you can get in 2,000 steps while boosting productivity, creativity, and energy?
6. Cargo Jeans
Every year has that one denim trend that everyone can’t get enough of. This year, it was boyfriend jeans with a slight flair; in 2016, it was a fit so skinny, it was like second skin (anyone else miss the days of skinny jeans?). In 2024, all the cool girls will be wearing cargo jeans. With a more trouser-like fit and pocket details, you’re going to want to buy your pair now before they’re all sold out.
7. Green as an accent color in the home
Expect to see shades of green in every cool girl’s home. From dark romantic greens (think: a rich velvet sofa) to bright mossy greens (Emma Chamberlain’s kitchen has us all repainting our cabinets), green is the it-color for an accent wall, statement furniture, or decor item in 2024. If you’re ready for a major change, consider painting a wall or bathroom in your favorite shade, or investing in an on-trend rug or chair. If you like your space nice and neutral, the trend can also be worked in through pillows, coffee table books, or candles for a subtle hint of the it-hue.
8. Clean makeup (that works)
In 2024, consumers will become increasingly savvy about what they put on their bodies. With more and more focus on endocrine disruptors and optimizing our environment to optimize our health, expect more and more clean, non-toxic brands and products to become popular as people expect more from their makeup. But it’s not enough to be non-toxic and better for the environment: we’re demanding our makeup work well too. Brands such as Kosas and Merit are ahead of the curb, providing clump-free mascara, eyeshadow with staying powder, glowy foundation that looks like second skin–that also happen to be better for you and the environment.
