Of all the seasons, winter fashion doesn’t exactly have the best reputation. In fact, it’s probably the least talked about and considered to be dominated by coats and snow boots. But we’re here to make the argument that winter trends don’t get the credit they deserve.
Contrary to popular belief, cold-weather fashion doesn’t have to be drab. Bright coats, incredible boots, layers of gorgeous knitwear—there’s much to be appreciated, and winter 2021 is here to prove our argument correct.
Just because the temps are low doesn’t mean your fashion morale has to be. These are the seven trends that will be dominating the winter scene this year—and that just might convince you winter isn’t so bad after all.
1. Quilting
For a subtle twist on classic winter pieces, quilting details are being added to coats, vests, and shackets. To take it a step further, pick up a quilted piece in patchwork fabrics for a grandma-chic vibe.
2. Fur
Fur for winter isn’t exactly groundbreaking, but this season, we’re seeing it in more bright colors and textures than ever before. The best part? By swapping out your go-to coat for a fur one, you have a trend that you’ll get endless wear out of and that will do all the talking for whatever you pair it with.
3. Knit everything
Once winter rolls around, we’re the first to start living in our knitwear, so adding even more knit pieces to our wardrobes isn’t something we’ll argue with. From midi dresses to cardigan sets to even pants, knit is expanding from tops to take over entire outfits.
4. Chunky boots
While fashion has finally started gravitating slowly away from the ultra-comfortable trends 2020 brought, the hottest shoe trend happens to be one that’s made for walking.
With lug-soles and utilitarian vibes, chunky chelsea boots are the wearable shoes that have taken over 2021—and with many of them being waterproof, they’ll be able to take on winter weather with ease.
5. Oversized puffers
Puffer coats are more of a need than a want for the cooler months, but this year, you have an excuse to make yours cozier than ever. In more oversized fits, puffers are large, in charge, and will keep you extra toasty while looking chic.
6. Updated leggings
Leggings will never go out of style, but they can be updated and revamped to be trendier and more out-of-the-house worthy. With additions of stirrup details and front and side slits, leggings are getting a more modern makeover.
7. Ruching
Ruching has been rearing its head for a solid chunk of 2021 and definitely won’t be disappearing for winter. Ruching details are being added to blouses and dresses for a result that’s ultra-flattering and begging to be worn on repeat.
