While everyone else is counting down the days until summer so they can finally use that saved-up PTO for fabulous trips to faraway destinations, what I’m really looking forward to is the extra time to read that the season inevitably brings. Plane rides with hours of uninterrupted time to bury your nose in a book, brighter evenings that let you push bedtime back just a few hours to squeeze in extra pages, and summer Fridays where you can log off a little earlier to sneak in one more chapter. With all that extra time, it only makes sense for us to add one more book to our summer lineup to fill out our Book Club members’ TBR shelves, right? There’s nothing we love more than a totally unique read, and we know The Everygirls are always looking to discuss books they may not have picked up otherwise. And with an antihero who may or may not be a sociopath, an Etsy-witch-esque hex gone wrong, and the unsolved murder of a situationship, it’s safe to say A Good Person is a completely singular reading experience. We were glued from page one, cringing at quite literally every move our FMC makes in the best way possible and racing to see how it ends. Our Bonus Book Club Pick: A Good Person
An electric binge-of-a-debut about an antihero who seeks revenge on her ex-situationship with a hex, only for him to actually, literally die.
Described as a “zillennial Gone Girl” by the New York Times Book Review and “part Fleabag, part Gone Girl” by theSkimm, A Good Person is the perfect read for people who like their main characters a little messy, to say the least. It opens with our main character, Lillian, in a situation many of us know all too well. Convinced the man she’s hooking up with is “the one,” when he will barely give her the time of day. She’s blindsided when she thinks Henry is finally going to make things official, only to be unceremoniously dumped.
Naturally, she copes in the way any woman in the digital age would, by finding a witch online and casting a hex on him. In no time, he’ll be crawling back to her, begging her to take him back, at least that’s what Lillian thinks until she wakes up the next morning to the news that Henry is dead—and she’s the prime murder suspect. What unfolds next is a downward spiral as she tries to clear her name, publicly mourn her boyfriend (because they were pretty much dating, right?), and control the widespread narrative about her.
A Good Person is a dark, addicting read, that honestly feels like a car crash you can’t look away from at times. And trust us, we mean that in a complimentary way. Even with its over-the-top plots and incredibly, incredibly flawed characters, it still has interesting, relatable commentary on modern dating and coming-of-age as a woman. It’s a book that has stuck firmly in our minds ever since we picked it up, begging to be discussed in a group setting.
