As a beauty writer, I’ve tried a lot of facials. Like, a slightly concerning number of facials. Over the years, I’ve let aestheticians steam, scrub, massage, extract, exfoliate, zap, freeze, and generally do all kinds of things to my face in the name of good skin (and journalism). Some treatments left me genuinely impressed, some were perfectly nice but didn’t exactly change my life, and a few made me wonder why I had willingly paid money to put my face through that. Beauty testing is glamorous like that.

It’s also made me very, very picky. I don’t need a facial to simply feel relaxed for 60 minutes (although I certainly won’t complain about one). If I’m handing over my hard-earned money, I want the treatment to actually do something—whether that means giving me an absurdly good glow, smoothing my skin, clearing out congestion, or delivering results that make me want to immediately book another appointment. After trying more than 100 facials, I’ve learned which ones are worth the splurge, which ones I’d happily skip and, most importantly, which ones I’d actually get again.

So, consider this my facial hall of fame. These are the five treatments that survived my extremely high-maintenance testing process and earned a permanent spot on my “yes, please” list. If you’re overwhelmed by a spa menu—or simply want to know which facial is actually worth your time and money—I’ve got you.

SkinPen Microneedling

If there’s one facial treatment that made me look in the mirror and actually gasp, it’s SkinPen microneedling. I’ll be upfront: This is not the facial you book when you want to float out of the treatment room feeling blissed-out and pampered. The tiny needles penetrate the skin to kick-start the body’s natural repair process, and yes, it hurts. There were definitely moments when I wondered why I had voluntarily signed up to have hundreds of tiny needles dragged across my face. But the results? Worth. Every. Second.

My biggest skin concern was my acne scars, and SkinPen made the most dramatic difference I’ve seen from a facial treatment. By encouraging the skin to rebuild with fresh, healthy cells, it helped soften the appearance of my scars and left my complexion looking smoother, more even, and ridiculously radiant. Honestly, I don’t know if my skin has ever looked quite that good. It also helps improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, including on the neck, so you’re getting more than just a temporary glow. Would I wince through the treatment again? Absolutely. Would I recommend it to anyone who wants a relaxing facial? Absolutely not. But if your goal is genuinely better-looking skin, I’d take the needles.

And pro tip? What you put on your skin after such an intense treatment matters, too. Once I started using Dermalogica Phyto Nature E2 after microneedling, I felt like my results went into overdrive. The regenerative daily treatment uses next-gen exosomes, along with pumpkin enzyme and a botanical complex, to support cellular renewal while visibly smoothing, firming, and brightening the skin over time. Basically, it helped me keep that post-treatment glow going long after I left the appointment.

Glacē Facial

If you have somewhere to be later that day and want your skin to look suspiciously good, Glacē is the facial I’d book. This treatment is basically a greatest-hits album of everything I want from a professional facial: exfoliation, targeted serums, a sculpting massage, and LED therapy, all packed into one appointment. There’s no downtime, no peeling phase, and no waiting three weeks to decide whether it actually worked. You leave looking fresher, glowier, and just a little more genetically blessed in just 30 minutes. And what is better than that?

What really sold me was how consistently good my skin looked afterward. Dr. Dendy Engelman, a board-certified dermatologist, says that’s one of Glacē’s biggest strengths, calling out its “predictability” and noting that patients see skin that looks “smoother, more hydrated, and more refreshed” after just one session. And I’d agree—my skin had that bouncy, lit-from-within look that usually requires a very good week of skincare, and I didn’t have to sacrifice a single day to recover. I followed it with Tatcha The Longevity Memory Cream to keep that juicy, hydrated finish going, because once you get that glow, obviously you want to milk it.

Premier Contour Facial

If you have a big event coming up, book this facial now. At Silver Mirror, the 90-minute, 17-step Premier Contour Facial is basically a full-on workout for your face, with dermaplaning, PureLift microcurrents, gua sha, TheraFace PRO cold therapy, LED light, oxygen infusion, and custom masks all working together. The combination leaves my skin looking smoother, brighter, and more defined, particularly around my cheekbones and jawline. It’s a lot of steps, but somehow the whole thing feels very easy and approachable.

And while Silver Mirror doesn’t have the hushed, ultra-luxe spa atmosphere some facial spots are going for, that’s actually part of its charm for me. The treatment rooms at their locations in three major cities are open, so you’ll hear some activity around you, but it never gets loud enough to feel distracting. I love that I can swing by after work, get my face thoroughly fussed over and head home without turning it into a three-hour self-care ceremony. It’s the kind of facial I’d book because I genuinely want the treatment, not because I need an excuse to make an entire day of it.

Hydrafacial

There are facials that leave you looking different, and then there are facials that make you feel like you’ve just pressure-washed your face in the best possible way. Hydrafacial falls firmly into the second category. The treatment exfoliates, cleans out your pores, and floods your skin with hydration, and the difference afterward is immediate. My skin felt so clean and ridiculously soft, but somehow not stripped or tight. Then I looked in the mirror and, yep, there was the glow. Dewy, plump, fresh-faced skin that made me briefly consider canceling all my plans so I could simply admire myself.

The extractions are another reason I keep coming back. Hydrafacial gets deep into the pores without the aggressive squeezing, redness, or general facial assault that can come with traditional extractions, while the antioxidant-rich hydration infusion gives you that signature luminous finish. It’s basically the facial I want when my skin has been looking a little blah and I need someone to come in, clean house, and make me look alive again. And because the treatment is customizable, you can adjust it as your skin changes, making it an easy one to keep in the rotation.

Sculpting Buccal Ritual

My face is not exactly subtle when I’ve had too much salt, too little sleep, or one of those weeks where everything feels slightly swollen. That’s where the Sage + Sound Sculpting Buccal Ritual comes in. The treatment centers on lymphatic drainage, which uses gentle massage techniques to encourage the movement of excess fluid and reduce that puffy, heavy feeling, while buccal massage and facial sculpting help define the cheekbones and jawline. The result is a noticeably more snatched, refreshed look that will have you posting selfies on your IG story like it’s your job.

The intraoral buccal massage is also a major part of what makes this treatment so good. By working inside the mouth as well as along the face and neck, the massage can help release built-up tension while the lymphatic techniques do their depuffing thing. And, for a very stressed-out girl, this felt extra luxurious. It’s a very specific kind of bliss—you’re lying there with your eyes closed, someone is expertly massaging your face, and you can practically feel the puffiness packing its bags. Add in the aromatherapy, and you leave feeling lighter, looser, and very, very refreshed.
