As much as we hate to think about cold weather before we have to, fall is usually interrupted by winter far sooner than we’d like it to be. Gone are the days when cozy knits could be worn alone without a coat. Soon, cold weather essentials will enter the scene to have their shining moment of the year.
Even if winter isn’t your thing, it isn’t all bad. Freezing temperatures mean you have to bundle up. However, that doesn’t mean you have to feel like a marshmallow that can’t move its arms. Stock up on chic cold-weather essentials so you can add layers to your look without compromising on style.
Winter is right around the corner, and so are puffer coats, beanies, etc. You might not instinctively look forward to all these winter pieces, but we’re here to prove you should.
A puffer coat
A puffer coat is to winter as denim is to Britney and Justin’s 2001 AMA look. You can’t enter the below-40 range of temperatures without a puffer coat to snuggle up in every time you leave the house. You can go as basic or as out-there as you want in terms of color and pattern. Just make sure you’ll look forward to wearing it.
Knee-high boots
Knee-high boots are a no-brainer for their design alone. But when it’s chilly out, they also provide a layer of warmth. It’s a timeless boot you’ll wear every single year. Plus, you’ll be excited to take them out of storage every time you swap your wardrobe out for winter.
A sweater dress
Perfect for everything from office days to holiday parties—a sweater dress can be dressed up or down according to your social calendar. You can pair a short one with knee-high boots, tights, and a coat for a seamless Thanksgiving look. Or pair it with sneakers and a puffer to meet up with friends. The options are endless but equally chic.
A beanie
Remember when your mom forced you to put a beanie on in childhood? Contrary to what you might have thought then, a beanie is the perfect finishing touch to a winter outfit (if only your freezing 10-year-old self knew!). If your coats are neutral, it’s the perfect opportunity to add a pop of color in a shade that’ll bring a burst of dopamine to chilly days.
Layer-able sweaters
There’s nothing worse than layering up to head to the office or go out with friends, only to sweat the entire way there. Avoid feeling like an overstuffed scarecrow by investing in a few thin, layer-able sweaters to put under a blazer or jacket without feeling bulky.
