I love a vacation as much as the next girl, but there’s a special kind of exhaustion that comes from planning a trip. Between finding the right destination, coordinating your PTO, researching restaurants, and building out a jam-packed itinerary, prepping for vacation can feel more like a part-time job than a break.

That’s why more travelers are opting for micro-cations (AKA quick, one- to three-day getaways) rather than big week-long vacations. These short, low-pressure trips deliver all the joy of getting away without the stress of planning an extended vacay. Whether it’s a quick flight to another city, a long weekend in a charming small town, or a few days spent exploring somewhere just a couple hours from home, micro-cations make travel feel doable again.

Read on for all the details on micro-cations, why travelers are embracing this trend, and how to plan one that actually leaves you feeling refreshed.

What are micro-cations?

Micro-cations are shorter, simpler trips that pack the same benefits of an extended vacation into a much smaller window of time. These mini getaways usually last anywhere from 24 hours to a long weekend. According to Expedia travel expert Melanie Fish, this type of travel is becoming surprisingly common. A recent report from Expedia revealed that 25% of millennial and Gen Z travelers plan to fly somewhere for just one day, with the most popular day-trip destinations being Toronto, Nassau, San Juan, and Montreal, Fish noted.

But you don’t necessarily have to hop on an international flight to get the most out of a micro-cation. Many travelers are choosing destinations close to home, too. The key is to keep the trip short, simple, and easy to plan.

Why take a micro-cation?

With limited PTO, rising travel costs, and increasingly busy schedules, it makes sense that travelers are rethinking their vacation strategy. Micro-cations are an easy way to enjoy the benefits of travel without the stress of planning a longer vacation. “Micro-cations are gaining momentum because they let travelers experience more for less time, less planning, and definitely less money,” Fish said.

Shorter trips are easier to budget for, too. Without the expense of lengthy hotel stays or a week’s worth of dining out, micro-cations give travelers the opportunity to explore new destinations without breaking the bank. In some cases, travelers can skip hotels or vacation rentals entirely by planning their flights to arrive early in the morning and depart late at night.

Micro-cations also take the pressure off planning a “perfect” vacation. “Even when people want to travel, the idea of planning a big, complicated vacation can feel overwhelming or too expensive,” said Arden Joy, travel expert and founder of Girls Who Travel. “[Micro-cations] are easier to plan, easier to afford, and easier to fit into real life.” These quick getaways give travelers more opportunities to break out of their everyday routines and experience something new, rather than waiting for one longer vacation every year.

How to plan your own micro-cation

Because micro-cations are designed to be short, thoughtful planning can make a big difference in how relaxing the trip is. Here’s what to consider when planning:

Choose an easy-to-reach destination

When you only have a few days, long travel days can quickly eat into your time at the destination. Choosing somewhere close to home helps maximize the amount of time you spend enjoying your trip. Joy recommended sticking to a destination within two to four hours away, whether that means driving distance or flight time.

Build the trip around one highlight

One of the easiest ways to make a short trip feel intentional is to anchor it around a single experience or purpose. “Give yourself one thing you’re really excited about and let that be the purpose of the trip,” Joy said. This could be anything from visiting a museum to attending a concert to booking a special dinner reservation.

Once that main event is set, the rest of the itinerary can remain flexible. “Organizing your day around one main moment can help you plan your 24 hours to the max,” Fish said.

Keep the itinerary simple

It may be tempting to squeeze in as many activities as possible, but overpacking your schedule can make a short trip feel stressful instead of restorative. Travelers often get more out of a micro-cation by planning a few key experiences instead of rushing around trying to hit all the highlights.

To streamline your itinerary, Joy recommended planning your days geographically whenever possible. “Instead of zig-zagging around to hit all the touristy stuff, pick one neighborhood or area and explore it deeply,” she said. “You will spend less time commuting and more time actually enjoying the place.”

Slow down

One of the most important steps in planning a relaxing micro-cation is giving yourself permission to enjoy it. With limited time available, it may be easy to feel rushed, but Joy encouraged travelers to embrace a slower pace while they’re away. “Be OK with doing very little,” she said. “Sleep in. People watch at a café. Go to a movie. Spend a whole day at just one museum.”

Even if it’s only a few days, it’s important to treat your micro-cation like a true vacation. “Treat it like a real vacation because it is,” Joy said. “Put a countdown on your phone, set an out-of-office message, and give yourself permission to be unavailable for a few days. That small mental shift makes a big difference.”
