I take after my mom in more ways than not. I’ve always resembled her physically, but now that I’m an adult, I can see that the traits of hers I tried so hard to bypass as an adolescent are the same ones I’m grateful to have now. I’ll always be happy to have inherited my mom’s ability to laugh at herself and the way she prioritizes her friendships, but perhaps most of all—I do owe my career to it—I’m glad I inherited her appreciation for style.
I grew up taking notes from the way my mom dressed, so now that I have the ability to get her the Mother’s Day gifts she deserves, the traditional bouquet of flowers or heart necklace simply won’t do. Instead, I always try to pay homage to our mutual interest and get my mom something for her closet that she might not ordinarily treat herself to. Obviously, though, that goes beyond the traditional sweater or pair of jeans—it has to feel truly special, and that’s where Sézane comes in.
Nothing speaks to timelessness like finding a piece that both my mom and I would be happy to wear, and since its inception in 2013, Sézane has done exactly that. From knitwear we both reach for year-round to the work tote each of us looks forward to commuting with, our shared taste has come full circle and led us to owning a slew of matching Sézane pieces (but unlike the days of my youth, that’s a fact that far from embarrasses me). Their latest collection is a treasure trove of Mother’s Day gift options that I know my mom will be thrilled with—and that I’ll be looking forward to “borrowing” from her closet later.
