Something that might make me a little unlikable? I had a borderline “storybook holiday” childhood. Cookie exchanges, Christmas caroling (who even does that?), Black Friday parking-lot camping, and every gift perfectly wrapped under the tree.

But now, at nearly 30, with divorced parents, Q4 deadlines, and a cat who keeps scaling the tree, I’ve learned the hard truth: Adults don’t experience the magic of the holidays—we produce it. Somewhere between Halloween candy and the office Secret Santa announcement, I blinked, and everything was suddenly on fire (figuratively, for now).

The good news? You don’t need a total holiday overhaul—just a few shortcuts that actually help. After years of doing the holidays in the most chaotic way possible, I finally found a system that works for the Type B girlies like me. Consider this your calm, “you’ve still got time” guide to surviving the holidays—even if you started late.

Build a realistic holiday plan (for when you’re already behind)

Let’s level-set. The problem isn’t that you’re bad at the holidays—it’s that the holidays require the project management skills of a Fortune 500 CEO. Before you spiral, try this reset:

  1. Create one “errand hour” a week: And the rest? Outsource. Once I stopped trying to do everything myself, I realized how many holiday stressors could be handled without me leaving the house—thanks to tools like Shipt, which offers same-day delivery from more than 100 national retailers (like Target, Meijer, PetSmart, and Michaels!) and your favorite local grocers.
  2. Pick your top three priorities: Not nine. Not 23. Three. Maybe that’s hosting Friendsgiving, mailing cards, and finishing shopping. Everything else becomes optional.
  3. Decide what you can buy instead of making: Store-bought pie counts. Pre-cut vegetables count. No one gets an award for exhaustion.

Handle holiday grocery runs without leaving the house

Holiday grocery shopping is its own special brand of chaos. The aisles are packed, the items on your list are flying off the shelves, and there’s a 99 percent chance you’ll forget at least one crucial ingredient (usually the one you need right now). Here’s where Shipt has bailed me out in a pinch:

  • Same-day grocery delivery: Perfect for that last-minute cookie bake that got added to my social calendar.
  • Real-time communication from shoppers with Shipt: From special requests to last-minute changes—they’re here to help whether you want the softer or firmer avocados, so you don’t end up with guacamole you can’t mash.
  • Thoughtful, detail-oriented substitutions when something’s out: My usual chocolate chips for a festive holiday mix that kept my cookies tasting just right.

Case in point: Last weekend, mid-cookie-baking, I realized I had completely run out of brown sugar. Instead of stopping everything, putting on boots, and braving the store, I added it to my Shipt order while the butter softened—and had it delivered the same day, keeping my kitchen chaos contained. If you’ve ever panic-searched “delivery from local stores near me” (and according to Google Trends, you have), this is about to save your season.

Streamline your last-minute decor, gifts, and hosting essentials

For most of us, the holiday season is a parade of tiny emergencies: broken lights, missing ingredients, forgotten gifts, and a sudden need for double-sided tape at 11 p.m. Luckily, most of it can be turned around with surprisingly little effort. And without leaving your house. Exhibit A:

  1. “My holiday decor is not decor-ing”: Order decor, crafting supplies, and decorating essentials.
  2. “I’m a late add to the gift exchange group chat”: Explore retailers to find gift sets, housewares, and a little something for everyone.
  3. “My pet needs a stocking too”: Pet toys, treats, or festive accessories. Check. Check. Check.
  4. “I want to give the perfect gift to my long-distance loved one”: Shipt’s new gift delivery feature makes it easy to share holiday moments—near or far—by sending essentials or surprise treats same-day with a personal note and digital greeting card, all handled with extra care. Just select “this is a gift” at checkout.
  5. “I have an oddly-specific item on my list”: Check out local grocers and specialty stores to find exactly what you need.

Everything above can be ordered through Shipt for same-day delivery—so you can stay in cozy pants while still conquering your to-do list.
