There’s a new book trend in the romance genre, and it’s adding a fantastical twist to your favorite stories. Sure, we love fake dating, friends-to-lovers, and all the other classic tropes, but sometimes you need a dash of magic in your contemporary romance. For a while, romantasy satiated our craving for otherworldly romance, then magical realism came in to freshen up the genre. But now, a new literary trend is taking over our bookshelves, and personally, I can’t get enough. Here’s everything you need to know about the bookish community’s next big thing: speculative fiction.
What is speculative fiction?
Blurring traditional genre boundaries, speculative fiction is a genre that romantasy and rom-com lovers alike can enjoy. If you love the stakes of a romantasy but aren’t looking for full-on fantasy, or you want the magic of magical realism with even more sweeping love stories and yearning, speculative fiction might be right up your alley.
Speculative romance often combines a central romantic plot with a certain “otherworldly” element. Think of it as a dash of sci-fi without needing to acquire a physics degree to understand the plot. Some potential elements of speculative fiction include alternate realities, time travel, parallel universes, “what if” scenarios, or magical and supernatural settings.
How is speculative fiction different from magical realism?
There’s definitely some overlap between magical realism and speculative fiction, but there are a few key things that distinguish them from each other. Magical realism typically introduces one element of magic into an otherwise realistic world. For example, someone might be living their everyday life until they suddenly find themselves stuck in a time loop.
Speculative fiction, on the other hand, is a broader genre that can include different worlds, timelines, technologies, or realities. If you gravitate toward magical realism, it’s likely you’ll also love the sweeping, slightly more sci-fi twist on the romance genre.
Is speculative fiction the new romantasy?
With a subgenre as popular as romantasy, it’s hard to say if speculative fiction books will overtake the genre, but I definitely think speculative romance is the next publishing trend we’ll see across our shelves.
Romances with these speculative, otherworldly elements appeal to the same fans who love the high stakes and magical twists of romantasy, but they’re brought a little more down to earth—or perhaps away from it, with a space setting. As readers’ appetites for romance and originality in books continue to grow, it makes sense that readers are searching for stories beyond just romantasy.
Speculative fiction is another way for authors to experiment within the romance genre. So while I don’t think romantasy is going anywhere anytime soon, speculative romance is still a trend to watch in the book space.
