The point is this: There’s a reason certain places garner a lot of attention, and it’s often because travelers collectively agree they’re truly worth the visit.

This viral saying is shaping how people approach escapism, showing that travelers are rejecting “brain rot” and seeking presence instead. Nature-focused getaways are on the rise, offering a much-needed opportunity to trade screen time for grounding. This movement is why you’ll see several outdoor-focused destinations topping many bucket lists in 2026, including Maui, Vail, and the Dolomites.
Hotels are driving trip decisions
If you appreciate a ritzy hotel bar or a luxe turn-down service, then you’re already living this trend. More than ever, travelers are choosing where to go based on where they want to stay, according to Skyscanner’s recent travel trends report. Jet-setters are choosing their accommodations with care as a way to set the tone for the entire holiday and experience a more well-rounded escape from day-to-day life.
Mountain tourism is piquing interest
Is there anything better than waking up in the mountains? According to Skyscanner, hotel bookings using the filter, “room with a mountain view,” are up 103% globally, making mountain getaways a top trend for travel in 2026. Aside from the obvious perks of being near ski slopes and hiking trails, travelers are seeking the peace and quiet, along with the clear air and cooler weather, that mountain towns provide.
More travelers are seeking connection
I traveled solo more in my twenties than I did with family or friends, and this style of vacationing only seems to be gaining popularity. While my trips were focused on seeking solitude, a recent report from Skyscanner revealed that 53% of travelers have gone, or considered going, overseas specifically to meet new people, whether they’re seeking friendships or something romantic. Gen Z seems to be leading this trend, with Boomers trailing close behind.
Beach vacations are taking a more active turn
As someone who loves to lounge in a beach chair for hours on end, this insight from Priceline’s 2026 travel trends report came as a surprise to me. It found that 83% want more from a beach vacation than just lying in the sun, with high-energy adventures like jungle hikes, parasailing, jet skiing, and cliff diving topping itineraries.

The Dolomites, Italy
My Instagram feed seems to be flooded with more and more photos of Euro summer vacations every year. “Italy is always top of mind, but many of my clients have been interested in new places to visit,” said Pamela Garza, founder of the luxury travel club Tory Ellers. Garza noted that the Dolomites are already proving to be a top choice for 2026, offering incredible outdoor experiences in the mountains and a nice alternative to Italian beach vacations. From hiking in the summer to snowshoeing in the winter, there are plenty of ways to get active while basking in the dramatic scenery. Prefer to kick back? Wellness spas and saunas are aplenty.
Jaipur, India
“U.S. travelers are increasingly drawn to destinations where every corner offers a photo worthy moment and immersive experience,” said Lourdes Losada, Director of Americas at Skyscanner. One destination that offers all that and more? Jaipur, AKA India’s “Pink City.” “Jaipur is capturing the attention of travelers looking for a mix of royal heritage, vibrant culture, and colorful streets that are straight out of a storybook,” Losada explained. Jaipur’s growing accessibility and upgraded infrastructure make it easier than ever for U.S. visitors to enjoy its grand architecture and vibrant culture. Plus, it’s a great destination to discover luxury stays without compromising authenticity.
Carmel Valley, California
A top travel trend from last year that is clearly here to stay? The desire for cozy, slow-paced getaways. “In 2026, wellness retreats are back stronger than ever, and Carmel Valley is top of mind for travelers looking to reunite with friends or even do the perfect solo getaway,” Garza said. Located a short drive inland from the central California coast, Carmel Valley offers the perfect place to reset and seek relaxation. Think scenic morning hikes, hilltop yoga, and world-class wineries—almost like the California version of The Holiday.
The Balkans
From Albania’s untouched beaches to Montenegro’s medieval towns to Croatia’s quieter corners, the Balkans have much to offer, and travelers are taking notice. “The Balkans have long been admired for their vibrant culture and storied past, but the region’s coastline is now emerging as a top destination for travelers interested in a less-traveled European Riviera,” said Melissa DaSilva, deputy CEO for the guided tour company Trafalgar.
The Balkan Peninsula, which also encompasses countries including Bulgaria, Romania, and mainland Greece, offers a wealth of history, stunning mountainous terrain, and beautiful coastlines to explore. “In Albania alone, international arrivals have climbed over 80% since pre-pandemic levels, reflecting the region’s quiet but steady rise in popularity,” DaSilva revealed. Depending on where exactly you land, you can choose to fill your trip with boat rides to secluded coves, wine tastings at family-run vineyards, or walking tours that are rich with history.
Vail, Colorado
While renowned for skiing, Vail also attracts visitors year-round, thanks to outdoor activities like hiking and rafting, charming Bavarian-style villages, and cool, low-humidity summer weather. It’s no wonder Skyskanner highlighted this mountain town as one of 2026’s buzziest places. “For those looking for a chic, winter getaway without the high-ticket price of Aspen, Vail is a more cost-friendly option, offering plenty of fine dining, spas, and après-ski, creating a nice balance of upscale and relaxation,” Losada explained. As a Colorado resident, I couldn’t agree more—and I advise you not to dismiss a visit in the spring or fall. Hotel prices are typically lower, and both seasons are beautiful in their own way!
Las Vegas, Nevada
Drawing inspiration from Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl, Losada predicted that travelers will increasingly flock to Las Vegas for an action-packed (yet still budget-friendly) escape. With its world-class dining, jaw-dropping entertainment, new attractions, and cutting-edge resorts, this city has a lot to offer every personality. Sure, the nightlife is unmatched, but tourists also enjoy more laid-back activities like lounging poolside, shopping, or scheduling spa treatments.
Mykonos, Greece
Take it from me: If you have the opportunity to go to Greece, start planning, stat. I went last summer with one of my best friends and made so many unforgettable memories. It’s truly the ultimate girls’ trip destination, so I totally get why Skyscanner listed Mykonos as one of the top 10 trending spots for 2026.
Known for its vibrant nightlife, stunning beaches, and whitewashed architecture, this sun-baked island offers the ideal mix of relaxation and fun. If you’re looking for a place with gorgeous scenery, incredible food, and plenty of opportunities for spontaneity, Mykonos should be at the top of your bucket list. Once you’re done exploring Mykonos, it’s a short trip to nearby islands like Santorini, Naxos, Milos, and Paros.
Limon, Costa Rica
“For decades, travelers have been obsessed with Costa Rica’s Pacific coastline, but since travelers are turning their attention to smaller, lesser-known locations, this is where Limon comes into play,” Losada explained. Nestled along the Caribbean coast, Limon is a port city that provides unexpected delights and easy access to untouched beach towns and lush rainforests that are’t yet plastered all over travel guides. Visitors can expect to find far less crowded beaches and a mix of relaxation and thrill-seeking excursions, like snorkeling and zip-lining. I personally couldn’t think of a better place to go on a couple’s getaway.
The Cotswolds, United Kingdom
I didn’t intend to bring up The Holiday more than once in this story, but here we are. This past summer, I took a note from Cameron Diaz’s character in the movie and planned my own solo escape to the Cotswolds. It was everything I had hoped it would be and more, so I’m not at all surprised that more people are catching on to this hidden gem. The Cotswolds were listed as one of Expedia’s destinations of the year, proving that travelers really are prioritizing off-the-grid experiences and cozy, low-key retreats. If the idea of losing cell phone service and having spotty access to Wifi excites you, this is the place to go. You’ll be charmed by the historic villages, quaint pubs, windy roads, and noisy sheep throughout this cozy area of England.
Maui, Hawaii
Last but certainly not least, you can never go wrong with a trip to Hawaii. “I believe Maui is the kind of destination where you go to celebrate life,” Garza said. “Whether it is a big milestone or you just want a week to enjoy with loved ones, this Hawaiian island is a top favorite for a reason.” Whether you’re hoping for a calm and serene beach experience or a more thrill-oriented itinerary, you can enjoy both in Maui. This lush island is really a choose-your-own-adventure type of destination, which also makes it a highly coveted choice for family trips.
Although the island experienced a devastating series of wildfires in 2023, Maui is well on the way to recovery and ready to welcome back visitors. “Since the 2023 wildfires, we have encouraged our clients to responsibly travel to Maui, respecting the community, the environment, and investing in local businesses with intention, and 2026 is no different,” Garza explained. “Experiencing Maui is about enjoying the island’s beauty, supporting the local community, and making the best memories with your loved ones.”
