It’s a brand new year, and with it comes a fresh start, updated goals, and a ton of new content to binge. While 2024 brought us a resurgence of thought-provoking and unique movies, 2025 is set to bring us several movies that will contend to be box office blockbusters. As for TV shows, the endless pool of streaming platforms continues to churn out new seasons of shows you love and a few original shows to get addicted to.
While the prospect of new movies and shows is exciting, tracking everything there is to watch can quickly become overwhelming. I myself have resorted to an actual spreadsheet to track it all, and even then I have trouble keeping up. If you’re feeling the same way but want to make sure you’re on top of the movies and shows everyone will be talking about, fear not. This list will help you find your way across streaming platforms and theaters for the year to come:
Netflix
Back in Action
During my annual December rewatch of The Holiday, I realized I hadn’t seen Cameron Diaz in any movies in a long time. That’s because Diaz took a break from acting for over a decade, but now she’s back in action, literally. Back in Action stars Diaz and Jamie Foxx as former CIA agents who left their work as spies to start a family. When their past comes back to haunt them unexpectedly, they are suddenly dragged back into the action-packed adventures they didn’t realize they missed.
The Residence (Season 1)
For anyone who loves Scandal, Bridgerton, or anything Shonda Rhimes has helmed, The Residence should be on your list. The show is a modern murder mystery set in the upstairs, downstairs, and backstairs of the White House. With an incredible cast led by Uzo Aduba of Orange Is the New Black, this show has major potential to be everyone’s new favorite series to talk about.
Squid Game (Season 3)
This Emmy-award-winning show by Hwang Dong-hyuk follows hundreds of players who compete in deadly children’s games to potentially win a gigantic cash prize. It seemed like Squid Game was all anyone talked about when the last season came out, and the next season will surely continue this momentum.
Running Point (Season 1)
For fans of Mindy Kaling shows like Never Have I Ever and The Sex Lives of College Girls, this new series, which takes on the world of sports, might interest you. Running Point follows Isla (Kate Hudson), the only daughter in a family of brothers, who takes over for her brother as president of the Los Angeles Waves basketball team. As Isla takes on her new role, she faces the obstacles of being a leader in a male-dominated profession. It’s sure to have the comedic and heartwarming take that Kaling’s shows are known for.
Stranger Things (Season 5)
The final season of Stranger Things has recently wrapped filming, and the series is set to premiere sometime this year. Now would be a good time to catch up on all the episodes, as everyone is sure to be talking about how the show dramatically wraps up. The story is set in 1980s Indiana, where a group of young friends unravel a series of supernatural forces within their town. It’s fun, it’s scary, and the next season is absolutely going to be full of surprises.
Wednesday (Season 2)
Jenna Ortega’s portrayal of Wednesday Addams, including a certain iconic dance routine, was among the most raved-about performances of 2022. Luckily, the wait for more Wednesday is almost over: Production wrapped on Season 2, and we’ll be seeing it sometime this year. The show follows Wednesday as she attends Nevermore Academy, befriends a teen wolf, and goes through the trials of being a supernatural teenager, all while nefarious beings are out to destroy her.
Prime Video
You’re Cordially Invited
It’s a classic wedding rom-com trope: Two weddings have been double booked in the same venue… and chaos ensues. That’s exactly the plot of this comedy starring Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell, who are each trying to help a loved one have the perfect wedding day. While it’s nothing we haven’t seen before, it’s the perfect movie to throw on when you’re in need of a cozy movie night after a long work week.
The Summer I Turned Pretty (Season 3)
The long-awaited next season of The Summer I Turned Pretty, based on the book series of the same name, is almost here. The cast announced they were filming last year and teased that we’ll see new episodes sometime this year. The show gives all the cozy summer vibes while following the coming-of-age story of a teenager and her first loves.
Peacock
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy
Back in 2001, Bridget Jones’ Diary, based on the book, became a favorite rom-com of the era. After a few more iterations of the books and movies, we now have a new chapter in the pages of Bridget’s Diary called Mad About the Boy. It follows Bridget’s life as a widow with two children as she rediscovers romance. If you’re a fan of One Day from Netflix, which personally still has me reeling, you’ll love to see that actor, Leo Woodall, as one of Bridget’s love interests.
Hulu
The Handmaid’s Tale (Season 6)
The Handmaid’s Tale, based on the book by Margaret Atwood, follows the story of June, who is forced to live in a horrific dystopian society called Gilead as she fights to be reunited with her family. Across six seasons, the series has followed June and those closest to her on their journey, and the final season is sure to be just as gut-wrenching as the ones before it. It’s set to premiere sometime in 2025.
The Bear (Season 4)
Starring Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri, who also made her directorial debut for an episode in Season 3, FX’s The Bear is about a struggling restaurant in Chicago and all the characters within it. It’s truly one of my favorites of recent years. Each episode feels like its own short film, sometimes even focusing on the backstory of one character in delightful ways that add context to the overall storyline. Season 4 premieres sometime this year.
Max
The White Lotus (Season 3)
Every season of The White Lotus is set in a different location at a luxurious resort, highlighting the lives of the people who work there and the people who vacation there. This season is set in Thailand, with, per usual, a packed cast of talented performers. It’s sure to have the mystery, intrigue, and intense drama that the show has been known for, as the plot unravels in completely unpredictable ways.
The Last of Us (Season 2)
With an absolutely gut-wrenching end to Season 1, the next season of The Last of Us is set to bring us more backstory, more thrills, and more character development in 2025. The Last of Us follows the story of hardened survivor Joel and teenager Ellie, as they protect each other while journeying through a perilous landscape in the wake of a global pandemic.
The Gilded Age (Season 3)
If you love a period piece, you might want to check out The Gilded Age. Created by the team that brought us Downton Abbey, this show follows the lives of the elite and the working people of New York City in the late 1800s. While Downton primarily follows one household, this show follows several households as they work their way toward the next century. The first two seasons are out now, and Season 3 is scheduled to drop this year.
Hacks (Season 4)
I absolutely love the show Hacks. It fulfills everything I look for in a show: heart, tackling important topics through comedy, and incredible performances. The third season is set to premiere on Max sometime in 2025 and will continue the story of comedian Deborah Vance and writer Ava Daniels as they work together (and against each other) to make their way in the entertainment industry.
Apple TV+
Severance (Season 2)
Severance brings a fresh, funny, and often chilling take on what it truly means to separate your life from your work. If you’ve ever worked in a corporate setting, this show might be eerily relatable. Season 1 of the show was released nearly three years ago, and fans have long awaited the continuation of the story, which ended on a huge cliffhanger. The show follows Mark and his fellow co-workers, who have opted to have their work and personal memories surgically divided. As mysterious things happen, the true nature of the place they work for is revealed.
The Studio (Season 1)
There have been many movies and shows that portray the inner workings of the entertainment industry, but this new series starring Seth Rogan has a refreshingly comedic and ironic take that will keep us laughing and questioning how everything (or anything) gets made. It follows the head of a legacy Hollywood movie studio and, if the trailer is any indication, has a star-studded cast of cameos and supporting characters.
The Buccaneers (Season 2)
While a release date hasn’t been announced, Apple TV+ confirmed in late 2023 that The Buccaneers would be coming back for season 2, set to premiere in 2025. More recently, the studio also confirmed that Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester would be joining the new season. The show follows a group of American sisters and friends who travel to London in the late 1800s. It’s a modern and fun twist on a period drama and honestly was one of my favorite new shows in the last few years. I truly can’t wait to see what happens next.
In Theaters
Mickey 17
From Bong Joon Ho, who brought us the Academy Award-winning movie Parasite, this new film is set in space, where Mickey, played by Robert Pattison, has signed up to work for an employer that requires him to die in order for new versions of himself to be reborn. When Mickey realizes older versions of himself have survived, chaos ensues. With the comedic and wildly unexpected sensibilities Bong Joon Ho is known for, this one is sure to be an Oscar contender.
Snow White
This live-action remake of the animated Disney classic stars Rachel Zegler of West Side Story as Snow White and Gal Gadot of Wonder Woman as the Evil Queen. It follows the story of Snow White, who is destined to challenge the Evil Queen in order to restore kindness to her kingdom. This movie is one of many new live-action remakes of Disney animated classics, followed by Lilo & Stitch later this year.
Jurassic World: Rebirth
For fans of Bridgerton and Jonathan Bailey, this one might be an interesting watch if you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to watch Anthony Bridgerton run around with dinosaurs. Also starring Scarlett Johansson, plot details and a trailer have yet to be revealed, but we know that it will take place five years after Jurassic World: Dominion.
Freakier Friday
In 2024, we got confirmation that a sequel to the popular Freaky Friday film starring rom-com comeback queen Lindsay Lohan and icon Jamie Lee Curtis will be hitting theaters this summer. The original film followed mom and daughter Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan) as they were magically switched into each other’s bodies. The sequel will pick up years later when Anna has a daughter of her own.
Downton Abbey 3
While we don’t have a trailer yet, I will absolutely be going to see the latest Downton Abbey movie in the theaters, as I don’t think I’ll ever get enough of one of my favorite period pieces. The movie will release in early fall of this year and follow the upstairs and downstairs events of the Crawley family in England. It’s also set to include almost all of the beloved characters fans have followed for more than a decade.
The Bride!
Coming to theaters September 26, 2025
Director Maggie Gyllenhaal is helming this sci-fi retelling of Frankenstein starring Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale. While we have limited information so far, we know the movie is set in 1930s Chicago and will put a spin on Frankenstein lore. The images released are already giving me Wednesday meets Romeo and Juliet vibes. It’s definitely a movie to look out for when the fall Halloween season hits.
Bugonia
If you’re still not over Poor Things or Kinds of Kindness, you’re in luck—2025 is bringing us another Yorgos Lanthimos masterpiece. Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons reunite on screen, this time in a sci-fi comedy following two conspiracy-obsessed men who kidnap the CEO of a powerful company, convinced she’s an alien sent to destroy Earth. If you’re a fan of Lanthimos’s surreal, dark comedies, or you’ve spiraled down one too many YouTube rabbit holes about what really happened to the Titanic, this film should definitely be on your radar.
Wicked: For Good (Part Two)
It’s hard to believe that we have to wait until November to see the second part of Wicked while the soundtrack to Part One is still on repeat on many of our playlists. Starring Cynthia Ervio as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Galinda, Wicked: For Good will continue the story of the two talented friends with magical powers as they forge their own paths and make history.
Avatar: Fire and Ash
The third installment of the five-part Avatar series is set to hit theaters in late 2025, promising to be just as spectacular as 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water. While plot details remain under wraps, we do know that Jake Sully and Neytiri will encounter a Na’vi fire tribe known as the Ash People. Even without the full story, one thing’s for sure: the film will be an epic adventure you won’t want to miss.
The Housemaid
If you’ve spent any time on BookTok, Bookstagram, or Booktube, chances are you’ve heard people rave about Freida McFadden’s thriller The Housemaid. This year, the bestselling novel is being adapted for the screen, starring Amanda Seyfried and Sydney Sweeney. The story follows Millie, a young woman trying to escape her criminal past, who takes a job as a live-in housekeeper for a wealthy couple, Nina and Andrew. At first, it seems like the perfect fresh start—until Nina’s erratic behavior raises red flags, and Millie begins to wonder why the door to her attic room locks only from the outside. Packed with twists and turns, this psychological thriller is set to be just as gripping on screen as it is on the page.
Marty Supreme
You may have seen photos circulating of Timothée Chalamet on set in 1950s period clothing in New York City. Those photos are from the filming of the upcoming A24 movie, Marty Supreme. A24 has previously brought us incredible films like Everything Everywhere All At Once, so one can assume that the studio pairing up with the talents of the one and only Chalamet is sure to be an interesting watch. The movie follows the story of a professional table tennis player who became one of the greats in the sport, portrayed by Chalamet.
