Spring not only brings about the return of picking up peonies at the grocery store and waking up to birds chirping in the morning, but also the sweet sound of a crowd roaring when their star-player hits a ball out of the park at a baseball game. That’s right: Baseball season is back.
No matter where you live, at some point this summer, you’ll inevitably be asked, “Hey, wanna go to a (insert team of choice) game this week?” Baseball game tickets are usually affordable and provide a good place to drink, eat, and hang out with friends, all while sitting outside on a gorgeous day. It’s the perfect outdoor activity (and is way better than watching a game from a crowded bar). Once you’ve got your tickets, it’s time to make your next decision: What are you going to wear?
And instead of trying to figure it out for ourselves, we decided to consult an expert. Payton Sartain Ross is a content creator who just so happens to be married to Joe Ross, an MLB pitcher. She spends tons of summer days at the ballpark, so if anyone knows how to put together a great baseball game outfit, it’s her.

I asked Payton for the inside scoop on her sense of style, fashion hacks she always relies on, and—of course—what’s in her bag.
What’s always in your bag at games? And do you have a clear bag you love?
I’ve invested in more than a few stadium-sized bags—I prefer them to clear bags when possible. You’ll find my ID/credit card, lip gloss, a small powder compact, and my little Canon Powershot camera in my bag on game days.
How do you balance being comfortable and feeling your best at a game?
I generally dress for comfort in all areas of my life! I find I look and feel my best in something simple, well-fitting, and comfortable, and I shop with that in mind.
What’s something you’ve learned or discovered about yourself from putting together outfits for games that has spilled into your everyday sense of style?
Baseball has such a classic Americana, effortless vibe that is certainly a part of my everyday style. I like to add casual elements to outfits outside of baseball, too. I want my style to feel cool and relaxed with touches of feminine elevation.
What’s one styling hack you always rely on to make your outfits feel more elevated?
Minimal accessories, but of high quality. A silk scarf, classic fine jewelry, or a well-crafted leather bag will always be a chic finishing touch to a more casual, simple look.
If you could pick 3-5 fashion essentials that make up a mini baseball game capsule wardrobe, what would they be?
A gameday bag, the perfect white tank top, a denim mini skirt, a flip flop or classic flat, and a silk scarf for accessorizing.

Baseball Game Outfits, Styled By Payton Sartain Ross
1. Basic tank + pinstripe jeans + ’47 cap
I love to tie baseball motifs into outfits—it feels very on-theme. These pinstripe jeans are extremely flattering and give an elevated baseball game vibe. I’d pair these with a simple tank and my husband’s team’s classic cap, adding an understated flip flop and clear bag to complete the look.

2. Graphic tee + khaki jeans
I wear a lot of ’47, from hats to outerwear to tees like this one from their recent collection with Stoney Clover Lane. A loose-fit crop tee and a pair of low rise jeans (these are my current favorites) make for an effortless, comfortable baseball game outfit. Some years I’ve opted for a classic sneaker for most of my game day looks, but I’m really loving the look of a chic leather flip flop this season.

3. Striped long-sleeve tee + denim mini skirt
If you can’t tell, I love a stripe for game day. Pairing an oversized horizontal stripe sweater, tee, or rugby tee with a little mini skirt and some loafers feels sporty and boyish, but in a chic way. I’d tuck the top up a bit to reveal more of the skirt and possibly some midriff if I’m feeling spicy (or sweaty, haha). Lastly, I’d add a classic, stadium-approved bag in my team’s hero color.

4. Basic tank + satin pants + silk scarf
If I want to elevate a game day look—which I’ll usually opt for if we have some sort of event at the field or we’re playing somewhere cool—a simple tank and satin pant are my go-to. I’ll tie in team colors with a silk scarf tied around my waist and add a small leather bag. I always wear my satin pants with a sandal, too.
