Maybe you’re still stuck in the cold months of what feels like an endless winter, and days spent lounging by the pool with a tan and a piña colada are only distant thoughts, or maybe you have plane tickets booked for a tropical getaway next week. Either way, those warm sunny days will be here before we know it, so it’s time we start taking stock of our swimsuit inventory, and maybe give it a little upgrade. That bikini you bought for a Spring Break trip to Cancun in college, or the one piece from your high school swim team, just won’t cut it anymore.
We’ve compiled our favorite and most doable trends that will be taking over your Insta feed, so that all you’ll have to worry about is sunscreen and how expensive that piña colada is.
1. Color Blocking
Color blocking on a bikini or one piece with a simple cut is the minimalistic approach to this season’s swimwear. It is modern, updated, trendy, and will stand out in a sea (literally) of floral suits or polka dot bikinis. And not to mention it’s insanely slimming (so you don’t need to think twice before indulging in that side of fries at the pool). For an extra cool factor, try color blocking in contrasting colors like black or white.
2. The Simple One-Piece
Bikinis may come and go, but the classic, slimming, and neutral-colored one piece will be your love for a lifetime; they are the skinny jeans of swimsuits. So for this season, make sure you have a go-to one piece that is a flattering cut, fits well (strapless may be good for the tan lines, but is it really worth it when you want to go off the diving board?), and is in a neutral and slimming color like black. To stand out even in the classic piece, opt for small details and cutouts, or a textured material like crochet.
3. Layered, Dainty, Gold Jewelry
The secret to accessorizing your bathing suit like a style star (without looking too try-hard) is stacking dainty gold necklaces and bracelets. Try a gold drop necklace, stacked with a few different chains, ranging from long to choker. Or, for an extra risk, try a dainty gold anklet or body chain, and you’ll feel like the beach goddess you were born to be.
4. The White Bikini
What better shows off that summer tan (or spray tan), than a white swimsuit? If you prefer bikinis, or are willing to try out the scandalous swimsuit staple, go with all-white: it’s totally slimming, flattering on all skin tones, and looks effortlessly chic and on-trend, no matter how many years it will be in style.
5. Geometric Cut Outs
One of the coolest new trends in swimwear for this summer is adding geometric cut-outs. Your favorite swimwear lines have been adding creative geometric shapes, and the most stylish celebrities have been rocking geometric cut-out monokinis on their winter beach getaways. Make the trend work for you with an open back in a one-piece, or subtle cutouts in your bikini top. The weird tan lines will be worth it.
6. Boho Cover Up
Going to the beach with your friends can be challenging because you just know an Instagram photoshoot is going to break out. How can you be trendy and chic, while not looking like you tried too hard? Enter the floral kimono. Not only is this the easiest, breeziest, most beautiful coverup of all time, but it’s much more unique and stylish than your average sundress or terrycloth romper (remember those from the 2000’s?), and looks like you didn’t put in any extra effort at all. You just are naturally that stylish, because you really are! You’ll be channeling your inner beach goddess in no time.
Which of these trends are you excited to try? What swimwear trends are your go-to’s for this season?
