Spooky season is upon us, and it’s officially my favorite time of the year. Halloween was my favorite holiday growing up (and still is) because I couldn’t resist the witchy, magical energy in the air. While other kids chose their favorite hero and popstar costumes, I donned pointy black hats with evil witch costumes. If you’re like me and love all the mystical energy of Halloween, get ready to cozy up at home with fuzzy blankets and snacks and watch a witchy movie. While it may in fact just be an excuse to watch Hocus Pocus for the thousandth time (guilty), there are so many picks to choose from—whether it’s focused on the dark arts, nostalgic classics, or creepy covens. So without further ado, let’s dive into the most bewitching movies and shows to put on your watchlist this spooky season.
1. American Horror Story: Coven
Honestly, all of the seasons of AHS give off creepy, witchy vibes that are perfect for the spooky season—but AHS: Coven really takes it to the next level. Set in modern-day New Orleans, this season delves into the world of witches descended from Salem. It follows Taissa Farmiga’s character, Zoe, discovering her powers as she joins a secret academy for witches. With an impressive ensemble cast (Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters…need I say more?), the show blends creepy horror, voodoo, and, of course, a group of badass witches finding their way in the modern world.
2. Twitches Too
You can make this one a double-feature by watching the first movie as well—but in my opinion, Twitches Too is where the witchy vibes really shine. In this Disney Channel sequel, twin witches Alex and Camryn return to the magical realm of Coventry to battle the evil threatening their kingdom. With their growing powers and bond as sisters, they uncover family secrets and take on new responsibilities as protectors.
3. Hocus Pocus
You guessed it—next on the lineup is our favorite Halloween movie Hocus Pocus. This cult classic follows three comically wicked witches resurrected in Salem after 300 years. When a group of kids accidentally brings the witches back, they must work together to stop them from stealing children’s souls. It’s full of campy humor and spooky charm, making it the perfect lighthearted entry into the season.
4. The Witch
If a scary movie that leaves your heart racing is more your style, The Witch is the perfect movie to add to your watchlist. Set in 1630s New England, this folk horror centers on a family exiled to a remote farm, where they encounter dark supernatural forces. Paranoia grows as the film takes us deeper into psychological thrills, fears of witchcraft, and religious hysteria.
5. Practical Magic
Keep things lighthearted with Practical Magic, a drama that tells the story of the Owens sisters (Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman), witches burdened by a family curse that dooms any man they love. As they struggle with their powers and personal losses, they must confront a deadly spirit and break their curse through sisterhood. It’s the perfect mix for those who want a little drama, but not too much spookiness.
6. The Harry Potter Series
I don’t think I’ve ever gone a year without watching the Harry Potter series at least three or four times. But there’s something extra special about watching these movies during the fall season. Step into the magical world of Hogwarts with its spells, mystical creatures, witches, and wizards—whether it’s the early days of Harry learning magic, or the final showdown between him and Voldemort.
7. Charmed
Don’t get it twisted—we’re talking about the original series of Charmed here, not the reboot. Charmed follows the Halliwell sisters, who discover they are the powerful “Charmed Ones,” destined to fight evil supernatural beings. Balancing everyday life with magical responsibilities, the show is full of witchy lore and an empowering narrative about sisterhood and destiny.
8. Kiki’s Delivery Service
If you grew up on Studio Ghibli films, take a trip down memory lane with this nostalgic animated story. Young witch Kiki moves to a seaside town to begin her independent training with her flying broomstick and loyal black cat. There, she starts a delivery business and, along the way, learns some important lessons about growing up as a witch.
9. Salem
There’s nothing more witchy than the birthplace of it all—Salem. Loosely inspired by the real Salem witch trials, this series imagines a world where witches are real and secretly orchestrating the events of 17th-century Massachusetts. It’s political, dark, and even a little sexy.
10. Sleepy Hollow
While I love the Johnny Depp movie version of Sleepy Hollow, the modernized TV version has an extra mystical touch that I love. This supernatural thriller revives the legend of Ichabod Crane, who awakens in modern-day Sleepy Hollow to battle the Headless Horseman and other apocalyptic threats. The series blends history, mythology, and witchcraft into a story that you can’t help but binge-watch.
11. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
We all know and love the classic series, Sabrina the Teenage Witch. But if you’ve ever wished that show was a little more spooky, this series is perfect for you! A darker reimagining of Sabrina’s story, this Netflix series follows Sabrina Spellman as she navigates life between the mortal and witch worlds. The show features occult rituals, demonic forces, and gothic horror—perfect for a Sabrina lover with a dark side.
12. Penny Dreadful
If you haven’t heard of this show, let me put you on to one of the most underrated shows I’ve ever seen (genuinely). In Victorian London, Penny Dreadful brings together iconic literary figures—Dracula, Frankenstein, Dorian Gray—and new, original characters. The show blends psychological horror, witchcraft, and dark romance. It’s beautifully written, often teetering on that edge between light and monstrous darkness.
13. The Order
Dark academia is the perfect aesthetic for the spooky season—mix it with witches, and you’ve got The Order. In this Netflix series, a college student joins a secret society and discovers a hidden world of magic, werewolves, and dark conspiracies. It’s an all-out battle between chaos and control in a spooky academic setting, which makes for a truly entertaining watch.
14. Dark Shadows
This gothic comedy directed by Tim Burton follows Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp), a rich and powerful playboy. When he breaks the heart of a witch named Angelique (Eva Green), she turns Barnabas into a vampire and buries him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas escapes from his tomb and returns to his family’s eerie mansion in the 1970s. Witches, curses, and some serious family dysfunction ensue in this quirky film, blending macabre humor and Burton’s signature flair.
