4 Ways to Wear a Summer Scarf

Summer. It’s officially in the air. Jorts, sandals, popsicles, mojitos, chambray, BBQ’s and …scarves?

Scarves. The secret summer weapon/accessory. (Think less weapon, more accessory.) The one item you can literally wear anywhere, at any time. It can add extra warmth, or keep you cool. It can be a basic, or a statement. It’s the true chameleon of your wardrobe. To prove it, we teamed up with Sole Society and Jessica Steele of The Steele Maiden to talk about her favorite (and extremely clever!) ways to tie up your scarf this season. And to think, you thought you had nothing to wear tonight!

AS A SKIRT (perfect for a summer concert)

You’re running late to meet the girls at a concert. Your current state involves tearing through your closet like Katniss on a rampage and the closest thing you’re getting to “boho-chic” is that peasant skirt that you should have left in your college dorm room. The good news: there’s a perfect solution—your summer scarf! Throw on a black tank dress and tie it in a chic knot around your waist. You’re ready to go in 5 minutes or less. (You’re welcome!)

Jessica’s tip: “There’s no shortage of things to do in New York in the summer, but outdoor concerts are one of my favorites.  An infinity scarf tied into an of the moment midi length skirt feels unexpected and fun, especially when paired with a printed hat and bold colored bag.”

AS A JACKET (perfect for date night)

Our best kept secret to the perfect patio date night? Be sure to stash a scarf in your bag! Rather than haul around a leather jacket or a sweater,  a scarf is the perfect extra “just in case” layer that can scrunch easily in your purse, should temperatures start to drop!

Jessica’s Tip: “For Summer date nights I try and put a twist on my usual day to day looks like mixing prints or tossing on a bright mini skirt with metallic accessories.  You never know when the weather may turn or a restaurant will blast their A/C, so keeping a scarf on hand to wrap over my shoulders is a must.”

AS A BAG (perfect for the farmer’s market)

Farmer’s markets are undoubtedly an unparallelled perk of summer. The only not-so-ideal factor? They require a very early wake up call! Rather than having to dive under the sink for that oversized tote to haul around, just throw on a scarf! Make sure to opt for some chic, comfy sandals (we love these from Sole Society), so you’re well equipped for strolling around!

Jessica’s tip: “I like to keep things easy on Saturday mornings, so a ‘just as comfy as pajamas’ jumpsuit and makeshift tote for hauling home fresh produce is an effortless choice”

AS A TURBAN (perfect for brunch when you haven’t washed your hair)

On a summer Sunday, there is always brunch on the agenda! But nobody likes to get up extra early to heat up the ole curling iron before her first mimosa! Opt for a head scarf instead to get you out the door. It’s the perfect accompaniment to your “bedhead-chic” hair!

Jessica’s Tip: “Brunch is a can’t miss destination on the weekends, even if you’ve overslept and have no time to fix your hair.  A scarf-turned-headwrap, plus trusty aviators and slip-on sneakers look chic while hiding the fact that I may have stayed out a bit too late the night before!”
