Bell Bottoms: How to Wear the Latest Denim Trend

It’s time to face the news skinny jeans lovers: Flares and bell bottoms are back! (Hint: You saw this coming in our Spring Trends article!)

We know styling this trend is a bit more daunting than your average pair of jeans, but rest assured it’s easier than it looks!

As versatile as they are trendy, this pair is a travel staple of Brynn Elliott Watkins of Being Elliott. So naturally we asked her to show us two ways to style the latest “it” jeans during her latest trip to Nashville. (And while we’ll always stand by our skinnies, we have to admit—we were quick to add bell bottoms to our online shopping cart!)

Look #1: Daytime Double Denim

When experimenting with the bell bottom trend, there’s no reason to spend a lot of cash up front. Case in point: Stores like H&M carry great pairs (like Brynn’s!). If you decide that you love ’em, then you can invest in a premium pair. Look for a high-waist pair, which is more flattering and retro (hello, gorgeous curves!) and less low-waist Lizzie McGuire. (Yikes!)

When styling for day, don’t be afraid to rock the denim on denim look. The likeminded fabrics create a bold statement that will really turn heads. Plus, the cropped quality of this top ensures Brynn’s waist is still accentuated. Don’t have a crop top? No problem—tuck in your shirt! Then, add a statement pair of tassel earrings to take this look to the next level.

As for length: Should your shoes show? Should pant hems skim the ground? It’s really up to you and what look you’re going for! The longer the pant hems, the longer your legs will look. Just make sure they don’t drag on the ground. (Take note: If your jeans are long when paired with heels, you might need a second, shorter pair to wear with flats.) We love that Brynn styled hers with chunky wedges, which add height. (But not pain!)

Look #2: Friday Night Fringe

For night, pair bell bottoms with an edgier top, which takes the jeans from retro to modern. Here, Brynn swapped her daytime denim top for a black fringe number. Why does it work so well? Again, a cropped top shows off the tiniest part of the waist, accentuating all her best assets!

“I have been crazy about all things fringe lately,” Brynn says. “Nighttime is the perfect time to add a bit of this trend to my look. This cropped fringe top is the perfect compliment!”

The finishing touches: a simple yet slightly edgy necklace and a pair of strappy sandals. You’re ready for a night on the town!
