Our lives are constantly in flux: switching jobs, changing apartments, and moving to different cities all seem par for the course. During these transitions, we ideally want to avoid the common: “Moving! Everything must go!” frame of mind. Investing in adaptable pieces will save you time and money, as long as you are willing to get creative. One of our favorites? The upholstered bench.
While this piece may not seem like a necessity, its many different functions make it worth its weight in gold! Extra points if it has storage.
1. A coffee table.
Myth: Benches are only for sitting. A sturdy tufted bench can easily be used as a coffee table and ottoman simultaneously. Add trays for glasses, candles, or vases and use the rest of the bench to prop up your feet at the end of a long workday. Entertaining? Slide the bench to the side of your couch and use for extra seating.
2. Bedroom seating and storage.
A bench at the foot of your bed adds a touch of sophistication and can also serve as your linen closet. Extra seating and storage? Too good to pass up.

3. Entryway bench.
Regardless of the size of your entryway, it’s always nice to have a place to throw your coat and bag and sit for the five minutes it takes to yank off your new over-the-knee boots (they were a half-size too small but you just had to have them, right?).

4. Dining bench.
If you can’t have your dream built-in breakfast nook, you can have the next best thing: bench seating. Maximize seating around your dining room table by putting an upholstered bench along one side, giving it a booth-like feel.
