30 Day Challenge: Save Money with DIY

In case you’ve been buried under a three-foot snowdrift thanks to Juno or Linus, you know we’ve been on a serious mission to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! And hydrate you did; sipping along the way to a healthier appreciation for all the benefits that water can provide. We soaked up (couldn’t help it) each post you showed us of your cool water bottles and with every new flavor you added to your H20, it was like rediscovering our favorite sandwich had zero calories all over again. Er, almost.

Your cells are grateful for the extra moisture during these long dry months, and we hope you keep up this habit–if not for your health, then at least because rosemary-raspberry water is just sinfully good.

In the event you’re suffering from FOMO over last month’s challenge, have no fear; we’ve got another one ready and waiting for you. Remember all those life hacks you’ve gathered for a cold winter’s day? Well, that day has arrived and it’s time to make the most of these cozy winter nights. Enter: a month of DIY. Yes, we know you are all Pinterest masters and if it were Guitar Hero, you’d be expert level. But pinning and doing are two different things, no?

But this isn’t all about crafts. The best part of DIY is that it speaks to every level of skill and a wide scope of interest. We won’t saddle you with embroidery how-to’s unless that’s your jam, because we want this month to be unique to you and your tastes! The benefits of creating things yourself stretch from creative release to the more practical rationale of money saving. Transitioning from shopping pre-made to whipping up a handmade gift in the comfort of your own home can put a realistic perspective on the value of items you regularly purchase without a second thought.

Here are a few of our favorite DIYs to get your creative juices flowing:

1. A batch of soup stock

Every good chef knows creating a good base is essential to any meal; making it yourself ensures you don’t end up with a canned mystery juice that dulls the rest of your perfectly procured flavors.

2. Laundry detergent and other cleaners

The best part about clean laundry is how fantastic it smells, so why not make your own and create a scent unique to you laden with your favorite scents? And let’s not forget that a little vinegar can go a long way.

3. Furniture and home decor

Looking to invest in a new piece of furniture? Why not finally take a stab at an Ikea hack, make your own headboard, or refinish a dresser?

4. A soothing face or hair mask

One of our favorite ways to kick back and marathon our TV shows is with this delicious face mask or hair mask. (We consider this multi-tasking.)

5. Fashion

Why spend $$$ on expensive distressed jeans when you can make them yourself?

6. Arts and crafts

Why fantasize about the gallery wall you want when you can create it? Check out these tips and tricks on helpful ways to decorate a space with more than just bookstore posters. Tired of standing in the aisles among a sea of cardstock? Make your own and never settle for a nearly perfect message, when you can create it yourself.
