Where are you from, and where do you currently reside?
I was born and raised in Toronto, and still live in my beautiful city.
How and when did you decide to start your blog? What gave you the courage and motivation to go for it?
I gave my first go at blogging in 2010, and at first I would only share the link with a few close friends and family. I felt I needed a creative outlet—I became so inspired from reading other blogs that it motivated me to become a curator and creator myself. Henri Matisse once said, “creativity takes courage,” and I truly believe that. I finally took a big step last summer to move over to the Blogger platform. I became more open about having a blog with a re-design, domain, and all. Having a blog has opened so many doors to amazing opportunities for me, and I am truly grateful I made that decision. Putting yourself online makes you vulnerable, but I have had no regrets.
What can Everygirl's expect when they visit your blog?
I’ve always wanted my blog to feel like a place where people can come and hang out with their close girlfriend. I love sharing and inspiring in the areas of photography, design, beauty, fashion, and décor. Most of all, I try to infuse positive messages into my posts.
What are some of your favorite posts you’ve ever written?
I love posts that resonate with my readers, I really like striking a chord. Some of my favorites are the Makeup Monday post inspired by a stunning Jose Villa photograph for the Style Me Pretty book, an open love letter to my love, and then there are those simple posts when I just express my gratitude. The gratitude post was celebrating a huge moment for SS Print Shop (the successful launch of the SS Print Shop Wedding Collection), and my blog going in a direction I had only hoped for it to when I kept it a secret way back when.
What influences and inspires you while you blog? What made you decide to focus on style + lifestyle?
I have always loved getting dressed up and frequently get asked by strangers, followers, or friends where I get my pieces from—so I thought this would be a fun element to bring to the blog and document my personal style. Fashion blogs are one of my favorites to go to for inspiration, so I love being that source for others as well. However, it’s not the only thing I am passionate about; I am influenced by graphic design, art, décor, love, travel etc. and wanted to bring them under the lifestyle umbrella of my blog.
What kind of camera do you use?
I use a Canon 60D for my blog, and a 5D Mark III for business.
SS Print Shop is the little shop that could! I can’t believe where it has gone in such a little time span, and feel so blessed. I started out just posting quotes on my old blog for a little segment I called “Wordy Wednesdays” and then e-mails came in from people asking if I sold these designs. I had never even thought of doing it until then, so I spoke with my close friend Sarah (of Sarah Tucker Events) and she was so helpful and encouraging of this business plan. She played a key role in motivating me to start my own shop, as well as my sweet boyfriend Neal and family—a supportive group of people makes all the difference because they provide you with the confidence you need to succeed.
What advice do you have for other girls who are looking to start a lifestyle and fashion blog?
The best advice I could give girls who are looking to start a lifestyle and fashion blog is to be authentic. People can sniff if you’re not being genuine from a mile away and will lose interest. Your trust with your readers is your biggest asset, especially if your blog starts developing in to a business. Do it with the best intentions, or don’t do it at all. Come up with original content, remember that comparison is the thief of joy and immerse yourself in this beautiful community. Some of my best friends come from blogging!
Any other words of wisdom for Everygirl’s out there?
Every internship, job, or life experience you go through matters—big or small. Remember each experience is taking you to where you are meant to be. I’ve found that everything is connected and was placed in my life to get me where I am. It now makes so much sense to me. Embrace it all, and try to become the best person you can be from each situation you are given. There is always room to express your gratitude to people and to life. There is enough success in this world for everyone to share, so support each other and always use your manners!
